Meralco seals one-year deals with 3 rookie picks

source: gmanews.tv

Slowly but surely, the Meralco Bolts are finally building the foundation of a franchise which it hopes would win a first ever Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) championship three years from now.

The team made their major move on that direction Friday when it came to terms with three of the four rookie players it tabbed in the recent PBA Draft.

Bam Gamalinda, Ford Arao and Khazim Mirza were all signed to similar one-year deals by the Bolts worth P1.2 million each, according to team manager Virgil Villavicencio. All three players were picked by Meralco in the second round.

The Bolts only have a single pick in the first round, which they traded to Air21 in order to acquire gunner MacMac Cardona in a three-team, four-player deal that also involved Talk 'N Text.

Gamalinda, a member of San Beda's NCAA championship teams, was selected 11th overall and first in the second round by Meralco.

Three picks later at 14th, the Bolts picked Arao, a gangling 6-foot-6 center from Ateneo, before ending their selection by choosing Mirza, the former University of Santo Tomas standout, with the 16th pick.

"It may be only for one year, but it's (deal) a higher and better than the usual contract given to a player who was drafted in the second round," Villavicencio said.

With all three agreeing to a one-year deal with Meralco, Filipino-American Shawn Weinstein is the only player drafted by the Bolts that is unsigned.

Taken by the team at No. 10 overall following a trade with Alaska in exchange for BonBon Custodio, Weinstein played for NCAA Division I school San Diego State University.

Apparently, Weinstein – through his agent, Caloy Allado, the father of Derby Ace forward Don Allado – is negotiating for a more lucrative contract, which Villavicencio finds too expensive especially for a player taken late in the first round.

Negotiations were put on hold until Monday.

"We think that it's too high a price," said Villavicencio. "But we're still negotiating. Hopefully we can agree on the terms and have a deal on Monday."

The addition of the three rookies certainly gives the Bolts fresh legs and talent to complement the presence of their veterans including Cardona, Nelbert Omolon, Chris Ross, Josh Urbiztondo and big man Marlou Aquino, whom Villavicencio assures will be given at least a one-conference contract by the team.

This developed as No. 6 pick Sean Michael Anthony is also set to sign a deal with Powerade by Monday.

The 6-foot-4 Anthony, according to his agent Charlie Dy, will nearly get the maximum pay allowed for rookies.

The league only allows teams to sign rookie players for a maximum contract of P8.7 million in three years.

Draft picks who earlier signed up with their respective teams include top overall selection Nonoy Baclao, No.2 Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra (No. 3) for Air21, and Elmer Espiritu (No. 4) for Alaska and Josh Vanlandingham (No. 5) for Rain or Shine. – JVP, GMANews.TV

Injury to De Ocampo may hamper TNT bid

Shifty guard Ryan Reyes is now fully recovered from a leg injury but Talk ’N Text will certainly be handicapped by the absence of top forward Ranidel de Ocampo who is still recuperating from foot operations last month.

Since the healing process takes at least four months, the 6-foot-5 de Ocampo will not see action for the Tropang Texters until December which could pose a potential danger to the team’s early campaign in the next PBA conference which will be an all-Filipino affair.

The bone spurs on his left foot that left him in pain since June were removed only last August 11 – just days before they were beaten by eventual PBA Fiesta Cup champion Alaska in their semis series.

The same procedure was done on his right foot last August 29.

Talagang masakit, pero pinipilit ko na lang minsan kasi parang sanay na din ako sa nararamdamang sakit,” said the 28-year-old de Ocampo.

De Ocampo, the first winner of the classification Top Performer award in the previous Fiesta Cup, said he’s still in crutches but he’s hoping he can start his rehabilitation next week.

De Ocampo averaged 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists last season.

TNT coach Chot Reyes acknowledges the absence of de Ocampo will create a gaping hole in the middle but he’s hoping that Kelly Williams and Harvey Carey would help each other in plugging the hole.

That’s something we already know, so we just have to make do with what we have,” said Reyes.

The 6-foot-4 Carey was a big revelation last season after norming 10.8 points and 8.2 rebounds, while the 6-foot-7 Williams, obtained by TNT together with Reyes in a deal with Sta. Lucia Realty in the Fiesta Cup, had 10.2 points and seven boards.

The team, according to Reyes, is set to leave for training camp in Qatar on Sept. 19.

Meantime, sources said that the deal between sister-teams San Miguel Beer and B-Meg Derby Ace is pushing through via a three-team trade.

The Beermen will get B-Meg’s playmaker Paul Artadi in exchange of Jonas Villanueva. Air21, as usual, will act as a conduit.

Rain or Shine eyes final 4

Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia believes they now have the right ingredients to be able to compete for playoff spots in the coming PBA conference.

For one, Rain or Shine has acquired as its No. 5 pick Fil-Am wingman Josh Vanlandingham and No. 15 pick guard RJ Jazul (No. 15) two players Garcia thinks can supply the additional firepower to the team.

“So far the two rookies look promising,” Garcia said Thursday as Jazul and Vanlandingham recently signed separate three-year deals to play for the team owned by Terry Que and Raymund Yu.

Yu and Que are likewise hoping to finally make it to the Final Four of the all-Filipino conference.

RJ and Josh are both good shooters, which we lacked in the past. I think both of them can contribute good things to the team. RJ is known to be a scorer when he was in the amateurs so we hope he can help us there, while Josh is a good shooter so it can open the lanes for us,” he added.

At 6-foot-4, Vanlandingham, the great grandson of two-time Olympian, swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso, is expected to play backup to fellow Fil-Am Gabe Norwood.

Norwood and Sol Mercado form as the team’s heart and soul.

As for the 5-foot-10 Jazul, the one-time Smart-Gilas Pilipinas member is a huge addition to the team’s backcourt rotation that also includes Solomon and TY Tang.

Aside from the rookies, the Elasto Painters also got bigmen John Ferriols and Paolo Bugia from free agency, as well as forward Doug Kramer, who they obtained in a trade with Air21 for second-year guard Marcy Arellano.

In other league developments, reigning Fiesta Cup champion Alaska has signed former University of the East stalwart Elmer Espiritu the No. 4 pick in last Sunday’s Rookie Draft to a three-year contract approximately worth P8.7 million late Wednesday.

The Aces obtained the fourth overall selection in the Draft when they dealt 2004 Rookie of the Year winner Larry Fonacier to Talk ‘N Text.

San Miguel has re-signed back-up point guard Denok Miranda to a two-year deal on Thursday. The former FEU playmaker joined the Beermen last season (Fiesta Cup).

PBA returns to old format

Newly appointed PBA commissioner Chito Salud expects quality games throughout the coming season as non-bearing matches are likely to be eliminated on the league’s return to the old three-conference format.

“The stats show the gates suffer in a long elimination round. In a long elims, there are non-bearing games that are not attractive to the fans. We’ll try to remove that,” Salud told The STAR.

The PBA addressed that concern in mounting the league calendar for the 2010-11 season, which fires off next month.

The league reverts to its tried and tested three-conference format featuring one all-Filipino tourney and two import-reinforced conferences.

The 36th PBA season starts with a shortened Philippine Cup where the 10 teams play only 14 games each in the eliminations, then the top eight advance to the playoffs.

The elims will be inter-intra where the 10 teams are divided into two groups. Group-mates meet each other once and play the teams in the other group twice.

The bottom two after the preliminary round are automatically out, leaving eight teams to battle it out in the playoffs.

The top two carry a twice-to-beat advantage over the No. 7 and No. 8 teams in the quarterfinals. The other pairings – No. 3 versus No. 6 and No. 4 versus No. 5 – figure in a best-of-three series. The semis and the finals will be best-of-seven showdowns.

The two import-laden tourneys carry different formats.

Meanwhile, San Miguel Beer and B-MEG Derby Ace finally completed a tradetransaction yesterday that sent Jonas Villanueva to the Llamados in exchange for Paul Artadi.

The sister ball clubs struck the deal with Air21 serving as conduit. The Express acquired Derby Ace’s 2014 first round pick in exchange for their 2013 second round pick.

At the same time, Air21 and Ginebra formalized their own deal that brought Billy Mamaril back to the Kings in exchange for a future pick.

In the second conference, the 10 teams figure in a single round robin affair in the elims with only six teams advancing to the playoffs.

The top two gain automatic semifinals entry with the next four settling for spots in two best-of-five quarterfinals matchups.

The third conference will have a different post-elims play format. After the one round robin elims, six teams advance to the next phase where they play another round, carrying over their elims win-loss records. A team which wins four of five games in the second round (regardless of their overall record) gets automatic playoff crack at a finals berth.

The first reinforced tourney will feature imports with the same height limitation. The other import-laden conference will adopt a height limitation handicapping system based on the performances of the teams in the first two conferences.

I foresee a slam-bang affair from the elims to the finals with these formats,” said Salud.

“We’ll really try to meet the expectation of our fans in terms of quality of the games. In terms of maximizing the potential of the players, we’ll allow them to play their game,”said Salud.

No Gilas stint for Yap; Villanueva to join Llamados next week

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv

Two-time Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Most Valuable Player (MVP) James Yap will beg off from joining the Smart-Gilas national developmental team in the Asian Games.

That's because B-Meg Derby Ace will have a depleted lineup at the start of the league's 36th season on October 3.

Defending Philippine Cup champion Derby Ace's title retention bid is in peril as the Llamados will miss the services of main frontliners Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris, who will undergo surgeries in the United States anytime soon.

"I told Mr. (Rene) Pardo that it will be really difficult for us if we will allow James to play for Smart-Gilas in the Asian Games. We will already miss our two frontliners, so it will be a tough task for us to defend the crown," said Llamados coach Jorge Gallent.

"Right now, we only have two big men in our team, Raffi Reavis and Jondan Salvador as Don Allado has yet to sign a contract because he’s in the United States while Romel Adducul's status remains up in the air because the team wants to have younger guys," he added.

Yap is also vacationing in the United States and will most likely join the team's first full practice session two weeks from now.

The 6-foot-2, reigning MVP, is one of those being requested by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to join the national developmental team to the Guangzhou Asian Games along with two other former PBA MVPs, Asi Taulava and Kelly Williams.

Taulava was already given the green light by his mother team, Powerade, while Williams, whose team Talk 'N Text is a sister company of Smart Communications, will most likely be allowed by his PBA ball club as well.

Still, SBP's plan to reinforce the Rajko Toroman-mentored all-amateur national developmental squad with three professional players will need the PBA board's approval.

Aside from being hard pressed to help his decimated squad, Yap is not keen on joiningthe national team aspirants as he will also attend to some personal issues.

A close associate of Yap, who requested anonymity, said the cager is mandated to attend hearings on his marital problems with estranged wife, popular movie and television personality Kris Aquino, who is the youngest sister of President Noynoy Aquino.

Gallent also said that Jonas Villanueva will join the squad next week and attend the September 9 practice.

"We've talked on the phone," said Gallent. "He's still in the United States and he will arrive on September 8."

Villanueva joins Derby Ace via a three-way trade involving San Miguel Beer and Air21. The Beermen will get Paul Artadi while the Express will secure a future second-round pick from the Llamados.

The Express have yet to decide who to unload from a roster with excessive players. Among those players being considered include former Rookie of the Year winner Rich Alvarez and Wesley Gonzales, who are being used as trade baits, but might also be cut from the squad.

"We have yet to finalize the player who will be involved in that trade," said Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio. "We have yet to discuss that." - JVP, GMANews.TV

Raymundo, Pingris out for season

source: Nelson Beltran | philstar.com

Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris, two of the main cogs of B-Meg Derby Ace’s All-Filipino champion team, will not be around when the team defends its crown in the coming 2010-2011 PBA season.

Rene Pardo, the current PBA board chairman from Derby Ace, said Raymundo and Pingris are both set to undergo arthroscopic surgery at the famed Kerlan Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles, California.

They would need four to five months to fully recover from the operation, according to Pardo.

In their absence, rookie draftees Pari Llagas and Val Acuna are likely to be signed up to fill their spots. The team is also looking at the free agent pool to beef up their frontcourt.

Raymundo, who sat out most of the recent Fiesta Conference due to an assortment of injuries, is already in the US, accompanied by team physical therapist Nick Ocampo. Pingris is set to leave in the next few days.

Both players endured pains in their effort to help the team in their triumphant ride in the 2010 Philippine Cup but the rigors of pushing themselves beyond the limit have taken their toll on them.

Pingris even took injections just to be able to continue playing during the Fiesta Cup playoffs.

The two were living embodiment of heart and character,” said Pardo of the two warriors.

Most of the team’s core players were absent when Derby Ace held its first practice under new coach Jorge Gallent at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

James Yap and Rafi Reavis are both on vacation in the US. Reavis, however, has agreed to a two-year contract-extension deal with the team.

Yap, meanwhile, is set to sign a new three-year pact worth P12.6 million upon his return.

With Raymundo and Pingris out, it’s highly unlikely Derby Ace would agree to loan Yap to Smart Gilas for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in November.

Yap himself has said he might decline invitation to play for the team.

Powerade allows Asi to join Smart Gilas Pilipinas for Asiad

Asi Taulava might be suiting up for the Smart-Gilas national developmental team to the Guangzhou Asian Games this November.

This after the management of Powerade agreed to loan the services of the 6-foot-9 Fil-Tongan for the second time.

Taulava reinforced the decimated national team aspirants in the tough Stankovic Cup where the Filipinos placed fourth. The fourth-place finish was enough to land the Philippines a spot in the Olympic-qualifying FIBA Asia Championship next year.

But JB Baylon, Powerade board governor in the Philippine BasketballAssociation, told GMANews.TV in an online interview that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ request to get the services of Taulava, a former PBA MVP, two-time MVP James Yap of B-Meg Derby Ace and 2008 MVP Kelly Williams, will need the league’s board approval.

“It still depends on the board," said Baylon.

The SBP, through its president Manny V. Pangilinan, wrote the PBA and requested the league to loan Taulava, Yap and Williams to the national developmental squad composed of some of the finest amateur cagers in the land.

Pangilinan was also the one who requested the PBA to allow Taulava to play for Smart-Gilas in the Stankovic Cup, which the league agreed.

But the PBA had already made an exit plan regarding its involvement in internationalbasketball competitions. As a matter of fact, the league reverted to its original three-conference format starting its 36th season on October 3 and replace the existing two-conference, one season format.

“I believe the PBA had already made an exit plan, that’s why, the PBA which will now be headed by new commissioner Chito Salud, is now back to a three-conference format," said outgoing PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios.

“Also, the league’s main thrust in the coming 36th season is to improve the gate attendance. With some of the stars not seeing action, it might have an effect in gate attendance," added Barrios.

Williams is likely to be loaned by his mother team, Talk N Text, as thefranchise is a sister company of Smart Communications under the Philippine Long Distance Telephone company.

But Yap’s availability hangs in the balance, not only for his team Derby Ace, but also because of the player's personal legal problems.

With Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris, two marquee players of the Llamados and key figures in the team’s drive to winning the Philippine Cup last season, Yap will be tasked to do much of the scoring load.

The 6-foot-2 reigning MVP is also mandated to attend hearings on his marital problems with estranged wife, popular television and movie personality Kris Aquino, youngest sister of President Noynoy Aquino. - GMANews.TV

Rookie picks Espiritu, Vanlandingham get maximum P8.7-M pact each

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv

Nonoy Baclao and Rabeh Al-Hussaini are the top two picks in the recently-concluded PBA Rookie Draft.

But fellow newcomer players Elmer Espiritu of Alaska and Fil-foreign Josh Vanlandingham of Rain or Shine will be given the same maximum contract just like the two highly-touted rookies from Air21.

Espiritu, the No.4 overall pick, and Vanlandingham, the No.5 choice, will each receive P8.7-million for three years from their respective mother teams.

This was revealed by Charlie Dy, who manages both players, to GMANews.TV.

The 6-foot-4 Espiritu will join the newly-crowned Aces and fill the void left by Larry Fonacier, who was unloaded due to salary cap issues.

Fonacier was traded to the Talk N Text Tropang Texters for the rights on the No.4 pick overall.

The Aces used that pick to get Espiritu, a high-flying, former slam dunk champion in the UAAP.

Vanlandingham, on the other hand, made a good impression in his first two days in practice with the Elasto Painters.

Vanlandingham was signed up by the Elasto Painters along with Ryan Arana, Jeff Chan and Eddie Laure.

Arana and Chan were signed up for another three years while Laure was given a one-year extension.

Over at the Barangay Ginebra camp, Ronald Tubid was given a fresh one-year contract so as Paul Artadi and Jonathan Fernandez with B-Meg Derby Ace.

Meanwhile, Barako Bull has acquired the services of Marvin Cruz, who was released by Powerade. - Rey Joble |

Philippine Patriots target ABL title repeat

9/01/2010 |  | 0 comments »

source: Abac Cordero | philstar.com

The second season of the Asean Basketball League will be a mere battle for second.

“Come February, we will be champions again,” declared Mikee Romero, who co-owns the Philippine Patriots team with businesman Tonyboy Cojuangco, in yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue.

It’s easy to ride on Romero’s confidence considering that the Patriots, despite losing the core of its team to last Sunday’s PBA draft, remain as the team to beat in the six-nation, home-and-away league.

In last week’s press launch for the coming ABL season, a very familiar question was askedof the other coaches who were at the Hotel Mulia in Jakarta: How can you beat the Philippines?

We will just do our best,” said the Indonesian coach.

Romero made the same prediction when he appeared at the weekly sports forum prior to the start of last year’s inagural season. Then, he said the Patriots are not going to settle for anything less than the title.

“Now, we’re going for back-to-back titles,” added Romero, the proud owner of theHarbour Centre team, winner of an unprecedented seven straight titles in the PhilippineBasketball League.

During a recent ABL board meeting, there was a suggestion to limit the Patriots to just one import, while the others will have two. The suggestion, however, was shot down for the sake of fair play.

Romero said the Patriots are now shopping for two imports to reinforce the team, which swept Indonesia in last year’s best-of-five finals, as well as dedicated locals to fill the shoes of those who’ve left the team.

Cojuangco, former chairman of PLDT and ABC-5, said he’s leaving it all up to Romero and the coaching staff, adding that he’s just as confident of a second straight crown for the favored Patriots.

“We hope to be able to assemble a squad that will overwhelm the other teams. Last year we were the favorites, and we won. I leave it all up to Mikee, Eric and our coaches. I know Mikee hates losing,” said Cojuangco.

The Patriots won last year’s crown with a team anchored on American imports Jason Dixon and Gabe Freeman, and local talents like Nonoy Baclao, Elmer Espiritu, Khazim Mirza and Bal Acuna who have all joined the PBA.

“There will be major changes in the team,” said Arejola, who’s looking at Fil-American and US NCAA Division 1 veteran Mark Jeffries, and regulars Jerwin Gaco and Warren Ibanez.

“We’re still looking for imports because I don’t think Freeman and Dixon will be available this time,” said Arejola.

Alas, the head coach, said the Patriots are into its last three days of a tryout for those who want to make the team, and said he expects those who were not drafted by the PBA last Sunday to line up for inclusion in the ABL squad.

We wrap up the tryouts this week, and start our regular training on Sept. 4, one month before the tournament begins,” said Alas, already looking forward to thePatriots’ opening game against the Brunei Barracudas at the Ynares Center on Oct. 3.

Alex Crisano, a former PBA star, is being considered to provide the muscle for the team, although the members of the coaching staff are having second thoughts whether they could have the 6-foot-8 player in shape -- physically and mentally.

“Well if he’s willing to sacrifice for the team then he’s welcome,” said Capacio.

The other opening game between the Kuala Lumpur Dragons and Thailand Cobras will take place Oct. 2 in Malaysia.

With Kerby, Pingris out, Llamados face tough task in Philippine Cup

9/01/2010 |  | 4 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

For sure, defending the PBA Philippine Cup title will be like going through the eye of the needle for B-Meg Derby Ace.

Not only one, but two key players of the Llamados are likely to sit out the season-opening conference that kicks off Oct. 3, putting the franchise’s ambitious bid to become the first back-to-back All-Filipino champions in 25 years in total jeopardy.

Big men Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris are set to undergo surgeries in the U.S. by next month, a scenario that could possibly kept them out in the early part – if not most – of the coveted conference in Asia’s first ever play for pay league.

New head coach Jorge Gallent admitted it’s going to be a tough task repeating as champions, but vows to give the rest of the field a very good fight.

We will defend it the best possible way. Other guys just have to fill their spots and step up," said Gallent, who took over the chores vacated by Ryan Gregorio, now the head coach of the Meralco Bolts.

Both Raymundo and Pingris are suffering tears in their right leg muscles that require surgery the soonest possible time.

Although the Llamados were able to win the Philippine Cup last season despite Raymundo sitting on the bench owing to a knee injury, Gallent believes the added absence of Pingris would definitely takes its toll on the team once the new season begins.

Pingris, a one-time Finals MVP and considered the Llamados’ best interior defender, will be out for at least five months.

Ditto for Raymundo, the other half of Derby Ace’s famed 1-2 punch together with two-time MVP James Yap.

“Perhaps, it will last a minimum of five months," said Gallent about the length of time the two big men needed to recover from surgeries.

Anticipating the absence of Pingris and Raymundo, Gallent opted to acquire power forward Pari Llagas of the University of the East as the team’s first round pick (no. 9) in last Sunday’s annual Rookie Draft at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig.

The Llamados are left to do with only Rafi Reavies as their legitimate center, and while they also have in their rosters Nino Canaleta and Don Allado, both are more known for shooting mid-range jumpers than posting up and banging bodies inside. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Rabeh, Baclao report for practice

8/31/2010 | ,  | 3 comments »

source: Waylon Galvez | mb.com.ph

Top rookie Nonoy Baclao and Rabeh Al-Hussaini reported for practice for the first time on Tuesday at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong, showing no signs of tension or friction that followed the annual PBA rookie draft Sunday.

Al-Hussaini, the six-foot-seven King Eagle, did not hide his displeasure over not being chosen the top pick, saying it was an insult to play second fiddle to Baclao, his former Ateneo teammate.

Two days after his controversial outburst, Al-Hussaini put his frustration behind and practiced hard with Baclao and the rest of his teammates.

“I realized that it really doesn’t matter if you’re picked No. 1 or 2,” Al-Hussaini said.“Yes, I was hurt. I’m just human to feel that way.”

“But now, wala na sa akin iyon, frustration ko lang yun. It’s a new chapter now, time to go back to work,” Al-Hussaini added.

Assistant coach Roel Nadurata, who presided over the team practice in the absence ofhead coach Yeng Guiao, said the addition of top rookies has boosted their chances in the coming All-Filipino conference.

Definitely, the rookies can help the team. We have a good composition now,” Nadurata said.

Al-Hussaini and Baclao, who guarded each other during practice, were later seen sharing light moments and exchanging tips for their post moves.

Al-Hussaini said he will channel his disappointment positively, adding he can use it as an extra motivation to prove his worth.

He cited the case of fellow Ateneo alumnus Larry Fonacier who was named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2004 despite being chosen by Red Bull in 2003 as the 14th overall pick.

Fonacier has since wore the jerseys of San Miguel Beer and Alaska and now plays with Talk ‘N Text.

Carlo Sharma, Al-Hussaini’s half-brother who also plays for the Express, said that the important thing now is to focus.

Of course, I’m proud of him. It’s rare for brothers to be given a chance to play together in one team,” said Sharma. “I’m looking forward to playing with him. What Rabeh needs is to focus now and forget the past, No. 1 or 2 it doesn’t matter.

But now, he has to accept it.”

PBA rookie hopeful Mark Jeffries to join Patriots' title defense bid

8/31/2010 | ,  | 5 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

Mark Jeffries, a potential first-round draftee in the Philippine Basketball Association, is now bringing his act in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).

After failing to secure the necessary documents that would make him eligible to enter the PBA Rookie Draft this year, Jeffries is now trying his luck with the defending champion Philippine Patriots.

Patriots team owner Mikee Romero , who graced Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue, is excited with the acquisition of Jeffries, a 6-foot-5 versatile guard.

We’re excited to have him and we have high expectations on him," said Romero. “He played for the US NCAA Division I team. He plays like Kelly Williams or Arwind Santos."

The entry of Jeffries is expected to boost the title retention bid of the Patriots, who are now looking for players after losing some of their previous members who joined the PBA Rookie Draft.

Among the key players of the Patriots who were drafted in the PBA were Nonoy Baclao, Elmer Espiritu, Val Acuña and Khasim Mirza.

“Losing Baclao is huge for this team because the defense starts and ends with him. But I’m confident we can form a stronger team compared to last year’s squad because of the abundance of talented players available," added Romero.

Co-team owner Tony Boy Cojuangco expects a tougher field in the second ABL season.

I’m sure other teams will beef up their lineups. But I believe we can defend the title because Mikee doesn’t want to lose and he will pick up the right players for this team," added Cojuangco.

Several Filipino players will also be allowed to reinforce the other participating squads in the league. The ABL has allowed three Filipino players to join the two other foreign imports this season.

The other competing teams include Indonesia, the KL Dragons of Malaysia, Thailand Cobras, Brunei Barracudas and Singapore Slingers.

The team, to be handled by head coach Louie Alas and assisted by Glen Capacio, will have an open tryout starting September 4.

I want to load this team with shooters because I know other teams will be playing zone against us. I’m confident we will be able to form a strong team that will display its never- say-die attitude," said Alas.

The team is also scouting for quality imports to beef up the interior defense.

“Gabe (Freeman) may not be able to join us this time since he is in Turkey while we have yet to talk with Jason Dixon. But we have a list of probable imports and we will know their status after a week," said team manager Erick Arejola.

The ABL opens its second season on October 2 in Malaysia as the KL Dragons host the Cobras while the defending champions opens their bid against the Brunei Barracudas at 8 p.m. the next day at the Ynares Sports Centre in Pasig City. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Baclao, Al-Hussaini sign P8.7-M, 3-year PBA deal

8/31/2010 | ,  | 8 comments »

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv

Two days after the biggest surprise in the history of the PBA Rookie Draft was made, Air21 has signed up top overall pick Nonoy Baclao and a discontented No. 2 choice Rabeh Al-Hussaini to a maximum deal given to a newcomer.

Each player agreed to a three-year deal worth P8.7-million.

This was confirmed by Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio to GMANews.TV through a text message.

Considered the best frontline combo in Ateneo's back-to-back championships in the UAAP for the past two years, the rift between Baclao and Al-Hussaini was considered the best kept secret in the Eagles' camp.

The two reportedly even came to blows during practice and didn't get along since then.

But Gregorio believes the first practice session on Tuesday was a good start not only for the two rookies at odds, but also the whole team.

"Everything is fine. They're very professional and we are starting on the right track," said Gregorio.

Rey Guevarra, who was selected third overall by the Express, was also signed to a three-year, P6-million deal.

Two more rookies were also signed up in the first working day of the week Tuesday – Rain or Shine's rookie picks Josh Vanlandingham and RJ Jazul.

Vanlandingham, picked fifth in the Draft, and Jazul, the former Smart-Gilas national developmental team standout selected in the second round by the Elasto Painters, were also signed to a three-year pact. - JVP, GMANews.TV

Draft stellar haul boosts Air21 cast

8/31/2010 |  | 2 comments »

source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

With six draft picks in tow, Air21 brought in three players and used two slots to trade for future considerations as the Express solidified its lineup for the coming PBA season.

Team management was clearly satisfied with the haul that Air 21 passed on its sixth choice – No. 20 in the second round – in Sunday’s rookie sweepstakes at the Market! Market! in Taguig.

Air 21 team manager Allan Gregorio said yesterday selecting Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra in 1-2-3 order was just what the doctor ordered for the team that posted an 11-27 overall record last season. Additionally, the Express dealt its No. 6 pick Sean Anthony to Powerade for RenRen Ritualo and a future choice to be determined in a meeting at noon today. It is likely the slot will be for 2011. Air 21 also traded its No. 18 pick to Powerade for the Tigers’ first round slot in 2012.

Before the draft, we studied our situation very carefully,” said Gregorio who was appointed team manager last month. “We looked at our salary level and where we were in relation to the cap. We looked at our 16 players and determined where we needed to cut or shore up.”

Gregorio explained that picking Baclao over Al-Hussaini was a calculated, psychological ploy to deliver a strong message that nobody is bigger than the organization. There was no intention to slight Al-Hussaini, widely considered the best player in the draft.

“In our mind, Rabeh was the No. 1 pick, no question,” said Gregorio. “But since we had the first three picks, it really didn’t matter who came ahead. We had spoken with Rabeh during his Smart-Gilas days and he told us as long as he was picked, he would be happy. So we thought of testing him, to give him a lesson in life. Now, we know he felt hurt. We’ll just have to manage his attitude. I don’t think it’s a big problem. It’s getting to know Rabeh a little more because he’s that special to us. We wanted to find out how he’ll react to this management decision.”

Gregorio said fans can expect a revitalized Air21 this coming season after a major faceliftfrom top to bottom. Gone is the franchise’s long-time PBA governor Lito Alvarez who is now Customs commissioner. In Alvarez’ place is 33-year-old Johan Ramos whose father Lambert was a candidate as PBA commissioner in 2007. Ramos once played for the Ateneo junior varsity and is in charge of the business operations of the Lina group of companies. He joined the Lina conglomerate in 2003 and made his mark as president of Mail and More.

Recruited in recent trades were J. R. Quinahan from Talk ‘N’ Text, Marcy Arellano from Rain Or Shine and Josh Urbiztondo from Meralco. Gone are Ritualo (to Powerade), Beau Belga (to Meralco), Doug Kramer (to Rain Or Shine), Billy Mamaril (to Ginebra), Richard Yee (to Barako), Ramsey Williams (free agent) and Egay Billones (free agent). Holdovers are Ronjay Buenafe, Ronnie Matias, Carlo Sharma, Rich Alvarez, Wesley Gonzales, Erick Rodriguez, Leo Najorda and Wynne Arboleda.

The Express, playing as Burger King, was knocked out in the first game of the wildcards by Coca-Cola in the last Philippine Cup and also eliminated in the first game of the wildcards by Rain Or Shine in the Fiesta Conference.

Choosing Baclao ahead of Al-Hussaini was as unpredictable as Air 21 coach Yeng Guiao’s tactic of surprising opposing teams by using unconventional starting lineups. As a psychological ploy, it will relieve Al-Hussaini of the pressure of proving himself as the top rookie. Al-Hussaini, the tallest among 60 draft candidates at 6-7, was easily the most outstanding player in the recent five-day rookie camp, averaging 14.8 points and firing 28 to power the Whites to an 80-78 win over the Yellows in the finals.

If there are cracks in Rabeh’s attitude, we want to deal with the problem right away and arrest the skid,” said Gregorio. “This wasn’t just a test or a gamble but a lesson in life for Rabeh. He will come out of this a better person, a better player and a better teammate.”

New franchise Meralco came away with four rookies in the draft – Shawn Weinstein, Bam-Bam Gamalinda, Ford Arao and Khasim Mirza. Ginebra picked up three guards – John Wilson, Jimbo Aquino and Robert Labagala. Kings coach Joseph Uichico jokingly threatened to play “five small” with his overcrowded guard corps. The speculation is Ginebra will unload several of its veteran backcourt men. B-Meg, Alaska and Rain Or Shine chose two each with the Llamados tapping Pari Llagas and Val Acuna, the Aces naming Elmer Espiritu and Marvin Hayes and the Elasto Painters selecting Josh Vanlandingham and R. J. Jazul. Barako and Powerade settled for a pick apiece with the Energy Coffee taking Borgie Hermida and the Tigers, Jai Reyes.

San Miguel Beer and Talk ‘N’ Text had no picks.

Free agency not a bad thing

8/31/2010 |  | 7 comments »

source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

For the 42 draft applicants snubbed in last Sunday’s PBA rookie sweepstakes, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, free agency may be the beginning of a new lease on life as now, the “descamisados” (shirtless or those without jerseys) aren’t restricted to try out for any team.

Don’t cry for the “descamisados” or so the song from the musical “Evita” goes.

Those who weren’t picked are free to join the team of their choice – unlike the 18 named in the draft – but there are no guarantees. A free agent may be signed for just 30 days at a salary far less than what a drafted rookie could earn. The least a player in a lineup can receive on a 30-day contract is P30,000 – compared to as much as P150,000 for a drafted rookie. Still, the situation isn’t hopeless.

In last year’s draft, 33 of 52 hopefuls weren’t picked but four “descamisados” made their way to the PBA just the same. They were Josh Urbiztondo, Bruce Viray, Ramsey Williamsand Bryan Faundo.

Several undrafted players from past years also saw action in the PBA last season. The “unchosen” ones were Nurjan Alfad (2004), Jerwin Gaco (2005), Christian Coronel (2005), Chico Lanete (2006), Al Vergara (2006), Don Dulay (2006), Chad Alonzo (2006), Dennis Daa (2006), Erick Rodriguez (2006), Reed Juntilla (2007) and Mark Yee (2008).

In past seasons, undrafted players who made it to the PBA included Paeng Santos (2000), Philip Newton (2002), Egay Echavez (2003), Alvin Pua (2004), Froilan Baguion (2005), Ron Capati (2005), Ronnie Bughao (2006), Jonathan Aldave (2006), Philip Butel (2006), Rob Sanz (2006), Chris Baluyot (2007), J. R. Aquino (2007) and Lawrence Bonus (2008).

The undrafted players should realize that getting picked is no assurance of a contract. In last year’s draft, San Miguel’s first round pick James Sena never got to play in the pros and neither did second rounders Edwin Asoro, Sean Co and P. J. Walsham.

So the bottom line is still performance, what a player can do on the floor. Being drafted opens the door to a contract but it’s not a sure ticket. A free agent may even dislodge a drafted rookie in tryouts for a roster spot – it depends on what a player brings to the table.

* * * *

The consolation of an undrafted player is he will be free to choose a team to try out for. He isn’t bound to any franchise. He can size up which team is in the best position to use his talents, which team he will be comfortable playing for because of its system, organization, coaching staff and players. It’s unlike a drafted player who has no choice in the matter until he is released and becomes a free agent if an offer sheet is not tendered within five working days from the rookie draft.

Last Sunday, two draft slots were unused as Powerade passed on No. 19 and Air 21 on No. 20, leaving 19 drafted players of a possible 21. In contrast, all 20 slots were taken up last year.

Of the 19 chosen, only two were not in my pre-draft list – No. 12 Robert Labagala and No. 13 Val Acuna.

Labagala, 26, applied for the draft last year but didn’t show up for the rookie camp along with FEU’s Marlon Adolfo and NU’s Raymond Aguilar. So the three were struck out from last year’s cast. They decided to try their luck instead this year. Adolfo and Aguilar weren’t picked but the 5-8 Labagala was tapped by Ginebra.

Labagala played five years for UE and is a cat-quick point guard from Cebu. Acuna, 24, also suited up for the Red Warriors and teamed with draft picks Nonoy Baclao and Elmer Espiritu on the Philippine Patriots squad that captured the first Asean Basketball League (ABL) championship this year. Acuna was B-Meg’s No. 13 pick.

* * * *

Six players who were snubbed but could find their way to the PBA are FEU’sAlfredo Gerilla, University of Hawaii’s John Smith, UE’s Rudy Lingganay, UE’s Hans Thiele, UST’s Mark Canlas and San Beda College’s Jay-R (Baby Shaq) Taganas.

Gerilla, 25, stands 6-3 3/4 and is a strong power forward. The Tacloban native had an abbreviated career at FEU, leading to speculation as to why he was undrafted, but came back to make waves in the PBL, Liga and Tournament of the Philippines (TOP). Smith, 24, is a 6-1 point guard with a deadly outside jumper. He averaged 16.3 points as a senior and gained All-Pacific West first team honors in 2008-09. Lingganay, 24, collected multiple best player awards in the ABL as a Kuala Lumpur Dragons import, the UAAP with UE, the PBL with Cobra and the TOP also with Cobra. Thiele, 26, is a lanky 6-4 1/4 shot blocker who played three years for UE. Canlas, 24, is 6-4 1/ 4 and played on the 2003 Asian junior championships. Taganas, 23, is 6-2 1/4 and an inside operator with big-man moves.

For the “descamisados,” don’t give up. Others who were similarly snubbed found their way to the PBA – you could do the same as free agents and follow in the footsteps of Lanete, Juntilla and Yee.

Ferriols, Bugia boost Painters’ frontline

Veteran frontliner John Ferriols and Paolo Bugia will provide additional height and heft to an undersized, but athletic, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters squad.

Rain or Shine co-team owner Raymond Yu confirmed the news to GMANews.TV through a text message.

We just added Ferriols and Bugia to our team," said Yu. “At least we’ve added few more frontliners who can help out Jay-R Reyes, Jervy Cruz and Doug Kramer.

Kramer, a 6-foot-4 banger, was picked up by the Elasto Painters in a trade with Air21 for Marcy Arellano during the latter stretch of the PBA Fiesta Conference won by Alaska.

Just as expected, Air21 is active in the wheeling dealing of players.

The Express is reportedly acting as conduit to the trade between sister teams B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados and the San Miguel Beermen. The Llamados will acquire the services of promising guard Jonas Villanueva while the Beermen will get Paul Artadi. The Express will get a future second-round pick.

With three new players joining the squad – top rookie picks Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra – the Express will be forced to unload two more players.

The team is reportedly putting former Rookie of the Year awardee Rich Alvarez and Wesley Gonzales on trading block.

Meanwhile, Talk N Text coach Chot Reyes expressed satisfaction in getting the services of Larry Fonacier, who was plucked by the Tropang Texters from the Alaska Aces during Draft Day.

The Tropang Texters were forced to unload their No.4 overall pick for the rights on Fonacier, who will play an integral part on the team’s offensive scheme.

Before the draft started, we were looking at a big man and a shooter. We were able to get Ali Peek, but lost Mac-Mac Cardona to Meralco. And then we found Larry (Fonacier) being offered to us by Alaska so we grabbed the opportunity. La

Nonoy picked over Rabeh a ploy, says Air21 exec

8/30/2010 |  | 0 comments »

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv

The decision to pick Siverino ‘Nonoy’ Baclao ahead of Rabeh Al-Hussaini was a ploy to bring the best out of both players and see how they will react with the turn of events.

“There were two things considered there. First, we want to give Baclao added confidence in his game and play like a true No.1 pick. Second, we want to bring the best out of Al-Hussaini and prove to everyone he deserves to be No.1," said newly-appointed Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio.

In the end, the Express left one guy happier than ever while the other one felt insulted. So there’s a problem that needs to be addressed quickly.

Yeng Guiao, a multi-titled, veteran coach, has experienced handling unhappy players due to playing time, players who were more of a head case or even those who spelled trouble inside the court in his 30 years as mentor in the league. He will have another tough task of trying to keep a hold of his new breed of talents.

The fiery mentor will have to take a serious look at Al-Hussaini – a discontented rookie, who ended up at No.2 behind Baclao in the just concluded PBA Annual Rookie Draft. Rey Guevarra, a talented small forward, was selected third overall by the Express.

“Yeah, I’ve seen and experienced a lot of those in my long coaching stint in the PBA,"said Guiao of his past players. “But this case involving Rabeh can be fixed. I’m confident we can fix it."

Al Hussaini, a potential top overall pick and a cinch to become the No.1 rookie choice, couldn’t hide his disappointment and felt insulted the moment Baclao’s name was called.

But for someone who’s been with these two players, there’s a deeper reason why Al-Hussaini felt insulted when Baclao’s name was called as the top overall pick in the Rookie Draft.

The two didn’t get along ever since 2008 when Ateneo won the first of its back-to-back UAAP championships," said a team insider from the Eagles, who’s been a witness on how sour the relationship of Al-Hussaini and Baclao was from that time.

The same source added that the two players came to blows in practice and the long feud was only overshadowed when the Blue Eagles won their second straight title.

On Draft Day, several key members of the Ateneo community, threw their support to Baclao and an alumnus who requested anonymity told GMANews.TV that they came in to support the hardworking, 6-foot-4 player from Bacolod City.

He is the more likeable Atenean. A player who has a humble beginning, who works hard every game and in practice," said this Ateneo alumnus.

Guiao said he’s not aware of the past bickering of his two new prized-rookies, but is hoping to get them play together for the benefit of the team.

I’m not aware of it. But for me, it’s a clean slate. I don’t have any business with whatever differences they had in the past, if there’s any. But I want to see them play hard and play within our system," said Guiao.

On Tuesday, the Express start their practice for the PBA’s 36th season. Who’s acting more professionally is what matters to Guiao.

Al-Hussaini won’t be traded

Bert Lina, chairman of the Lina Group of Companies and team owner of the Express, gave out directives to the management and coaching staff to let their top three rookies be their cornerstone of their franchise.

“The top rookies will stay. A lot of people thought Al-Hussaini’s comments may have fueled talks that he might be traded. But no. No less than our chairman, Mr. Lina, gave the orders that these rookies will stay and become the cornerstone of our franchise," said Gregorio.

Gregorio added that the top three rookies will also be offered to a three-year pact on Tuesday.

Baclao and Rabeh will be offered maximum three-year contracts," said Gregorio.“Guevarra will be given a little less, but also to a three-year pact."

Lhuillier eyes PBA franchise

8/30/2010 |  | 0 comments »

source: Tito S. Talao | mb.com.ph

The call of the Philippine Basketball Association has reached the Queen City of the South through the M. Lhuillier Group of Companies.

Owned by businessman and sports patron Michel Lhuillier, with hands-on management participation from sons Michael (vice president for Visayas and Mindanao) and Charles (vice president for Luzon), ML Kwarta Padala brand, just one of the Lhuilliers’ business units, is seriously contemplating on joining the PBA.

“Perhaps for the 37th season,” said a source privy to the interest expressed by the elder Lhuillier, a member of the board of trustees of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission.

Instrumental in launching the basketball careers of Jojo Lastimosa, Samboy Lim, Peter Aguilar and Al Solis, among others, through his teams in the Philippine Amateur Basketball League in the ‘80s, Lhuillier and long-time head coach and Cebu City councilor Raul Alcoseba, the source said, are weighing all options in analyzing the viability of putting up a PBA team in promoting ML Kwarta Padala nationwide.

It’s only a matter of time although they don’t want to rush things,” the source said.“They recognize the strength of the PBA as a premier advertising vehicle, and their passion for basketball has long been established.”

Provincial games in Cebu City have received consistent backing from the Lhuillier family through the years, a relationship the renowned clan hopes to cement into a more permanent partnership.

Rabeh gets lesson in humility

8/30/2010 |  | 0 comments »

source: Waylon Galvez | mb.com.ph

Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s outburst on PBA draft day, in which he said he was “insulted” by not being picked No. 1 overall by Air21, will not be reason for the Express to consider trading the formerAteneo star whose first day as a pro exploded in controversy.

Insiders said his being picked No. 2 was in reality a management ploy to inculcate some lessons in humility for the former Ateneo player whose star complex has reportedly grated many of his peers and other basketball officials.

But Air21 is keeping al-Hussaini and ready to begin its coming campaign with the ex-UAAP star as one of its leading stalwarts.

Definitely not,” said Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio Monday when asked if Al-Hussaini’s comment had affected the team’s overall appraisal of the player who waspicked No. 2 after nearly all reports indicated he’d be the No. 1 pick.

Instead, that honor went to fellow Ateneo alumnus Nonoy Baclao whose selection shocked the big crowd and other basketball experts.

We’re not thinking about it (trading Al-Hussaini), we’re not going that direction. We feel that Rabeh, as well as the other rookie picks we had, will be a big part for the organization’s bid to build a competitive team in the PBA,” Gregorio added.

Al-Hussaini, a product of the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas program, said he was disappointed with the turn of events, saying: “Insulto ’yun.”

However, Al-Hussaini, whose half-brother Carlo Sharma is a member of the Express, later recovered from the shock and said it really doesn’t matter whether he’s No. 1 or 2 pick. What is important, he said, is that he’s been drafted.

A source from Air21 said that it was actually part of management’s overall plan to choose Baclao over Al-Hussaini. Without directly saying so, management hinted that it wanted to teach the ex-Ateneo player some early lessons in humility.

“It’s not just about basketball, more importantly it’s about life as we try to teach the players a lesson or two about humility,” an Air21 source added.

People who have seen and observed Al-Hussaini said the player appears to have an attitude problem and such problem, if not addressed properly, may have dire consequences when he finally comes face-to-face with Air21 coach Yeng Guiao, a disciplinarian known to chew players to bits.

Trade galore: Fonacier, Ritualo, Villanueva headed to new teams

Trading of players during Draft Day is nothing but an ordinary sight in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Deadly shooters Larry Fonacier and Ren-Ren Ritualo and promising guard Jonas Villanueva are now headed to their new teams after separate deals were reached on or before the day of the 2010 Rookie Draft.

The 6-foot-3 Fonacier will join a Talk N Text Tropang Texters squad orphaned by their leading scorer the past two seasons -- Mac Mac Cardona, who is now with new team Meralco.

Pressed with issues on salary cap, Alaska was forced to unload Fonacier, who was shipped to the Tropang Texters. In return, the Aces got the rights on the No.4 overall pick and immediately named high-flying Elmer Espirtu of the University of the East Warriors as their top rookie pick.

The Aces also worked on a separate trade, this time, with Meralco. They acquired the services of combo guard Bonbon Custodio then gave up their No. 10 pick in the first round to the Bolts.

“It costs us Larry in this season's draft and it will definitely hurt us a lot. He played a pivotal role in the championship series against San Miguel and was really coming into his own, but he became a victim of the salary cap," said Alaska coach Tim Cone, the winningest mentor among active coaches.

The good side is, he will join a Talk N Text where he can earn more and will be under the guidance of Chot Reyes, who is a good friend of mine. He promised me to take care of Larry," added Cone.

But Alaska not only kept the nucleus of the team intact. It bolstered the roster even more with the addition of Espiritu, a 6-foot-3 forward and former Slam Dunk champion of the UAAP, as well as securing the services of Custodio and Marvin Hayes.

“Other teams are looking at either La Salle or Ateneo, but we wanted players from UE, this season, so we picked Elmer Espiritu and got Bonbon Custodio via a trade. I've been keeping an eye on Espiritu as early as two years ago. As for Bonbon, we hope he can fill up the spot left by Larry."

One good thing about Bonbon is that he is a combo guard. A combo guard is ideal for Triangle Offense. There's something in Marvin Hayes, which can be developed and that's the reason why we took a chance on him."

Ritualo, a 6-foot-1 gunner, will be reunited with his old coach – Bo Perasol – with the Powerade Tigers.

The deal was agreed in principle while all 10 teams were waiting for their turn to hand over their respective picks in the draft.

First, the Express and the Tigers worked on a trade for the rights on the No. 6 overall pick obtained by Powerade.

Powerade chose Josh Vanlandingham, a Fil-Canadian forward, as the sixth pick, but gave up its first-round draft pick for 2012 to Air21. Then, the two teams worked on a deal that shipped Ritualo out of the Express and sent him to the Tigers’ den.

In return, the Express will secure the Tigers’ second-round pick next year.

And then, there’s Villanueva, a talented guard, who blossomed last season, but found himself relegated back as a third-string guard in San Miguel’s congested backcourt unit.

Villanueva is reportedly headed to B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados, but a conduit squad is needed in order for the transfer to push through.

A highly-placed source from B-Meg’s camp told GMANews.TV that a conduit squad isthe only lacking piece that will make Villanueva an instant addition to Llamados’ squad, whose guard spot needs some retooling.

As of now, that’s the only (conduit) lacking we have. Jonas’ transfer is being worked out now. We just have to finish the other details," said the source.

PBA Rookie Draft: Baclao chosen No.1 over Rabeh

8/29/2010 |  | 47 comments »

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv

Nonoy Baclao, the ultimate role player in this year’s cast ofaspirants, upstaged his more illustrious Ateneo teammate, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, to become the top overall pick in the 2010 Philippine Basketball Association Rookie Draft Sunday at the Market! Market! in Taguig.

Baclao, the 23-year-old, 6-foot-4 forward from Bacolod, was surprisingly selected as this year’s No.1 pick, leaving everyone stunned, including Al-Hussaini.

The 6-foot-7 Al-Hussaini, who felt slighted when his name wasn’t mentioned when Air21’s No.1 pick was called by incoming PBA commissioner Atty. Rudy Salud, was selected No.2.

The Express made a historic moment by completing the top three picks in the Draft and choosing small forward Rey Guevarra at No.3.

In what was easily regarded as a night of surprises, the name of Baclao being called ahead of Al-Husseini left everyone in disbelief.

None among them was more surprised than Baclao himself, who was searching forwords when he was interviewed by sportswriters.

“I don’t know what to say," said Baclao. “I didn’t expect to be chosen No.1, because people thought it’s going to be Rabeh. But I’m thankful to be picked No.1."

Asked whether there’s added pressure being the No.1 overall pick or feeling nervous in stepping closer to fulfilling his ultimate dream of playing in the big league, Baclao’s answer was short, but sweet.

“I’m more excited than nervous or pressured," added Baclao.

Al-Hussaini, expected to be named No.1, pouted when he was called at center stage to receive his team jacket and cap given by representatives of Air21 headed by team owners Bert and Sylvia Lina, head coach Yeng Guiao and Rabeh’s half-brother, Carlo Sharma.

The drama bloated even more when Al-Hussaini let it all out in front of mediamen covering the first activity of the league's 36th season.

“I felt I was insulted," said Al-Hussaini. “But it’s okay. There was no communication from Air21 if I will be selected No.2."

Guiao explained that the decision to choose Baclao over Al-Hussaini as No.1 was management’s decision.

“It was management decision, but the main idea here is to give Baclao the much-needed confidence, that’s why we selected him No.1. But I see no problem with it as long as I have those players – Baclao, Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra – on my team."

Guevarra’s inclusion was a late decision made by the management and coaching staff. We were thorn between him and another good forward, Elmer Espiritu. The three players are good for a rebuilding team like us," added Guiao.

The fourth pick was surprisingly obtained by Alaska from Talk N Text after both teams agreed to trade the No.4 pick for veteran deadshot Larry Fonacier.

Picked as No.5 in the draft is Fil-Canadian forward Josh Vanlandingham while the sixth pick was acquired by Powerade from Air21 in exchange for the Tigers’ first-round pick in 2012.

The two teams also agreed on a trade that sent veteran shooter Ren-Ren Ritualo to the Tigers in exchange for their second round pick in 2011.

Barangay Ginebra, which owns the No. 7 and No.8 picks, added yet more guards in their congested backcourt lineup. The Gin Kings selected high-scoring John Wilson from Jose Rizal University at No.7 and last year’s NCAA Most Valuable Player Jimbo Aquino at No.8.

B-MEG Derby Ace added a bruising frontliner in Pari Llagas while Alaska traded its rights to the last pick in the first round to Meralco for the services of talented combo guard Bonbon Custodio.

In the second round, only Air21 passed up on its last two picks in this year’s draft.

Those who were drafted in the second round were Bam Gamalinda, 11th (Meralco), Rob Labagala, 12th (Ginebra), Val Acuña, 13th (B-Meg Derby Ace), Claiford Arao, 14th (Meralco), RJ Jazul, 15th (Rain or Shine, acquired via a trade with Alaska), Khazim Mirza, 16th (Meralco), John Carlos Hermida, 17th (Barako Bull), Jai Reyes, 19th (Powerade) and Marvin Hayes, 21st (Alaska). - GMANews.TV

NBA greats became fans of PBA's 'Triggerman'

Glen Rice and Mitch Richmond, members of the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA champion teams, many-time All-Star Chris Webber and 'The Glove' Gary Payton, a consistent fixture in the NBA All-Defensive team and part of the Miamia Heat's 2006 champion squad, were all witness to the greatness of a Filipino deadhsot nicknamed 'The Triggerman.'

These stars along with the up-and-coming players from the NBA D-League, were turned to believers and watched in awe Allan Caidic's superb marksmanship.

Caidic unloaded 54 points, built around 14 triples, and was definitely the star of the showin the Red Team's 177-167 triumph over the White Squad in the NBA Asia Challenge 2010 on Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-foot-2 lefty shooter provided the highlight reels by sinking one triple after another and put on a clinical show in front of some of the past and present players from the two oldest professional leagues – the NBA and the PBA – as well as the rising stars from the D-League.

"Trigger, trigger, trigger," said Rice, who himself was beaten by Caidic in their short, three-point shootout battle during a break. "Watching guys like The Triggerman putting on a show, I can’t wait to come back here."

Rice was one of the NBA legends who teamed up with Caidic along with Payton.

But even some of the world's best players emulated by local cagers were simply amazed on how this gunner from University of the East sank basket after basket from beyond the arc with consistency.

Caidic scored the first seven points of the Red Team, then hit three-pointers in succession. He had three straight triples that gave the Red Team a 62-60 lead, 7:06 left in the second period.

In the third, the former UE Warrior buried four treys before his teammates, led by Rico Maierhofer and Vergel Meneses, started to get their rhythm as the Red Team established their first sizeable lead, 147-136, with still 8:03 left.

Caidic's final trey of the night with 1:31 left, gave Red Team a 173-157 spread for their biggest lead.

"They gave me the ball a lot, so there’s no other choice but to shoot it," said Caidic. "The pressure is there to make the shot and luckily I made them. I’ve really prepared for this because I want to give my best and show it to the legends."

Rice contributed 19 points, including five triples, mostly against his counterpart from the White Team, Webber.

Former PBA import Ritchie Frahm led the White squad with 24 points, the same output made by Webber.

"It didn't matter what I did today, but this night belongs to The Triggerman," said Frahm, who played for the Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals as import in the PBA 2002 Governors Cup when the team was still coached by Bill Bayno.

Webber, a 6-foot-10 forward who played for the Sacramento Kings, wasn't surprised with the Filipinos’ brand of play.

"Basketball is universal and the PBA is the second oldest league in the world next to the NBA," said Webber. “But the Triggerman was incredible. He still makes shot even if I put my hand on his face."

Webber also heaped praises on Atoy Co, the 60-year-old cager, who was an instant fan favorite in this match.

Co, a former member of the Crispa Redmanizers, tallied 10 points.

"This is my first time to play in two years," said Webber. “But to see a 60-year-old guy to play at the level is really incredible. I wonder how we would look like playing basketball when we reach 60. That’s what really difficult to imagine." – JVP, GMANews.TV

Express set to make Ateneo's 'dynamic duo' as Top 2 picks

8/28/2010 |  | 0 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

Air21 has already taken the surprise out of Sunday's PBA Annual Rookie Draft by declaring it will take the Ateneo duo of Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Nonoy Baclao as the top two overall picks.

Then again, a few shockers may still spring out of the hour-long proceedings at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig.

"Expect a lot of trades on Draft Day," said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.

Unlike the Express, who own four picks in the first round alone including the first three selections, the Bolts won't have their chance until the end of the round at No. 11, triggering speculations the league’s newest member would try to make a deal to fill up positions the team are still lacking.

Express coach Yeng Guiao said Al-Hussaini and Baclao will go down as the franchise's top two picks in the proceedings that start at 4 p.m.

The team's choices after that remains its biggest dilemma.

"We have no problems for the Nos. 1 and 2," said Guiao "But we are still undecided when it comes to the No. 3 pick."

The third pick was acquired by the Express in the Mac-Mac Cardona trade that also involved Meralco and Talk 'N Text.

After that, Air21 will have another first round pick at No. 6, before choosing 18th and 20th in the second round.

The Tropang Texters are the first team to select in the first round after the Express at No. 4, followed by Rain or Shine at No. 5.

Ginebra will have back-to-back picks at nos. 7th and 8th, respectively, followed by reigning Philippine cup champion Derby Ace at 9th and recently-crowned Fiesta Cup titlist Alaska at 10th.

Rounding up the second round in order are Ginebra, Derby Ace, Meralco, Alaska, Meralco, Barako Bull, Air21, Coca-Cola, Air21 and Alaska.

For this year's Draft, a total of 66 aspirants applied in the league's first official activity ushering the 2010-2011 season.

Outside of Al-Hussaini and Baclao, other potential talent who made quite an impression in the week-long Rookie camp are former slam dunk champion Elmer Espiritu, one-time national team stalwarts Rey Guevarra and RJ Jazul, Hans Thiele, Pari Llagas, NCAA Finals MVP Jimbo Aquino, and Fil-Canadian Sean Michael Anthony.

Incoming commissioner Atty. Chito Salud is already expected to share center stage with predecessor Sonny Barrios in Sunday’s proceedings. – JVP, GMANews.TV

He’s the man,” Rice said of Caidic.

“They kept giving me the ball and I had no other choice but to shoot,” Caidic, a member of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players, said.

The NBA Asia Challenge had members of the NBA entourage mixing up with past and present PBA stars to form two teams and the White saw all nine of its players score in twin digits with four-time MVP Alvin Patrimonio shooting his number 16.

Greg Lazare of the D-League scattered 22 points for the Red, which also drew 16 points each from Santos and Vergel Meneses.

In a related PBA development, Ato Agustin was named head coach of San Miguel, with the team continuing to shuffle its coaches.

Siot Tanquingcen, who handled the Beermen the last three seasons, was demoted as Jong Uichico’s assistant at Barangay Ginebra even as Derby Ace, the third team of the San Miguel group in the league, was appointed two new deputies.

Art Dela Cruz, the former defensive ace of San Miguel, was shipped to the Llamados to assist newly-minted coach George Gallent. The team also signed up Richard Del Rosario, an erstwhile assistant over at Rain or Shine, as another deputy.

Derby Ace gave the head coaching job to Gallent after Ryan Gregorio, who won three titles with the franchise, decided to grab a lucrative five-year offer dangled by newcomer Meralco close to three weeks ago.

With Gregorio’s departure, Derby Ace, which will defend the Philippine Cup starting Oct. 3, the Llamados practically lost their entire coaching staff with Ronnie Magsanoc deciding to join Gregorio.

Rey Evangelista also left the team to attend to his business in Ormoc even as Gregorio also signed up former Sta. Lucia head coach Boyet Fernandez and ex-Talk ‘N Text guard Patrick Fran as assistant coaches.

Asiad: Toroman to request PBA for Yap, Williams, Asi

source: Ronnie Nathanielsz | inquirer.net

Buoyed by the excellent showing of a depleted Smart Gilas Pilipinas five in the recent Fiba Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut, national coach Rajko Toroman plans to request the PBA for two key players to join Kelly Williams in the Asian Games lineup.

In an interview with the Inquirer after a two-hour practice Thursday at the Ynares Center, Toroman said he would like to strengthen the team with shooting star James Yap, this year’s PBA Most Valuable Player, and Coca-Cola big man Asi Taulava, a last-minute reinforcement for the RP five in the Stankovic Cup.

Williams’ place in the RP five was secured early this year when he was traded to Talk ‘N Text by Sta. Lucia.

Talk ‘N Text is owned by business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan, who is also the president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, which bankrolls the campaign of Smart Gilas.

However, PBA board chair Rene Pardo said no formal request had been submitted to the PBA and the league only learned of the Smart Gilas requests through the media.

Pardo said he would take up the issue at the next board meeting, stressing that “we want to set up clear-cut rules and guidelines” regarding the lending of PBA players to the national team.

The PBA chair said Taulava’s Stankovic Cup stint was approved since the Tigers had been eliminated by the time the Beirut tournament started.

Pardo said the Asian Games will coincide with the opening of the All-Filipino Conference and that the absence of Yap, Williams and Taulava may affect the performance of their respective PBA teams.

Toroman said he plans to announce the Asian Games lineup within 10 days.

Toroman said he had been “looking at Ryan Reyes from the beginning, but not anymore because his wife will give birth and he wants to be near her in the middle of November during the Asian Games.”

He added that Sol Mercado, a big point guard who likes the open court and is a great finisher, was a prospect he had to drop after the cager suffered a stress fracture in the PBA playoffs.
Toroman said Yap is “one of the options” and he has already told manager Frankie Lim that“Yap wants to play.”

“I want Chris Tiu and James Yap to play together. They’ll make a unit and everybody will cheer for our team, and that will be very, very strong.”

Air21’s 3rd pick a ‘problem'

Air21, which owns the first three picks in Sunday’s PBA Rookie Draft at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig City, is dead set on making Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Noy Baclao as its top two picks.

But for its third choice, the Express are torn between former collegiate slam dunk champions, Elmer Espiritu and Rey Guevara.

“Honestly, it’s either Elmer or Rey. But the final recommendation will come from the coaching staff,” Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio said.

The 6-foot-4 Espiritu, who played for the University of the East Red Warriors, won a slam dunk title in the NCAA-UAAP game in 2007, while the 6-foot-1 Guevara, a former Letran Knight, also won the event in 2006.

If you need role player who can get rebound and contribute on offense, it’s Espiritu. But if you need offense right away, it’s Guevara. So it all depends on what we really need. Management and coaching staff will deliberate on this,”Gregorio added.

What is certain, according to Gregorio, is that the third overall pick won’t be traded.

“That’s the instruction of (team owner) Mr. Bert Lina,” he said.

“Our boss wants to have a have young, talented, and marketable team. Our option right now is to keep all these (picks),” Gregorio added.

Aside from the first three picks, the Express also own the sixth, 18th and 19th overall picks in the annual Draft.

Air21 won the No. 1 lottery pick of the Draft, and took the No. 2 from Talk ’N Text and secured the No. 3 pick from Meralco following separate trade deals.

Talk ’N Text has the No. 4 pick, which was acquired from Air21 in a previous deal with Coca-Cola involving Chris Ross, while at No. 5 is Rain or Shine. The Express have the sixth pick obtained in a trade with the Barangay Ginebra Kings (Yancy de Ocampo).

Ginebra will be picking No. 7 (acquired in a trade with Red Bull involving San Miguel Beer and Mike Holper) and No. 8, while picking No. 9 is Philippine Cup champion B-Meg Derby Ace, No. 10 is Fiesta Cup champion Alaska and No. 11 is Meralco.

Baguio signs fresh contract with Aces; gets 3-year deal worth P12.6 million

Cyrus Baguio, whose backcourt wizardry helped Alaska win the PBA Fiesta Cup recently and was named co-MVP of thetournament, has reportedly agreed to a new three-year contract with the Aces worth P12.6 million.

“The two parties are now working out the other details of the contract, but basically it’s good already,” said the source, who asked not to be named as he is not authorized to discuss the contract negotiations between Baguio and Alaska.

The 6-foot-2 Baguio helped the Aces win the Fiesta Cup when they dethroned San Miguel Beer, 4-2, in the best-of-seven title series. Baguio was named co-Finals MVP with LA Tenorio.

Originally drafted by Red Bull in the second round (14th overall) during the 2003 PBA Rookie Draft, Baguio was traded to Air21/Burger King last year, and then to Barangay Ginebra.

In a stunning move, Alaska dealt its leader, former two-time MVP Willie Miller to the Kings, for Baguio, who became an instant success when he flourished under coach Tim Cone’s triangle offense as the team’s shooting guard.

Meantime, sources said that defending Philippine Cup (all-Filipino) champion B-Meg Derby Ace (formerly Purefoods), has also agreed to re-sign veteran point guard Paul Artadi and third year guard Jonathan Fernandez.

The two are expected to sign anytime this week.

Also, James Yap, last season’s MVP and Philippine Cup’s Best Player of the Conference, is set to sign a new deal with the Llamados. He is currently vacationing in the United States andwill return next week.

Gregorio building title contender

8/25/2010 |  | 0 comments »

source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

Newly appointed Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio declined yesterday to predict how soon he can deliver a championship to the power franchise in the PBA but vowed to at least turn the Bolts into a never-say-die team immediately.

“We’re starting from scratch,” said Gregorio. “We’re building a new team that will embrace the competitive spirit of a title contender. It may take time for us to win a championship but you can be sure we’ll be out there fighting.”

Gregorio said a big first step in the building process was the acquisition of MacMac Cardona from Talk ‘N’ Text. Cardona was in Australia visiting former La Salle teammate P. J. Walsham when the trade was consummated last weekend. He returns to Manila today and will attend the launch of the electric company’s sports advocacy program at the Meralco theater tomorrow.

Cardona was given an extension up to 2013 on his Texters’ contract which was due to expire next year.

Meralco team manager Virgil Villavicencio and Gregorio spoke with Cardona on overseas telephone to break the news of the deal.

“Macmac’s excited,” said Gregorio. “I told him he was the only choice to be our go-to guy. We want him to be our scorer. We want the ball in his hands. When I coached Purefoods, it was a similar role that James (Yap) and Kerby (Raymundo) played. In the teams I’ve coached, roles were clearly defined for every player. It will be the same with Meralco.”

Gregorio said 6-9 center Marlou Aquino has inked a one-conference contract and will play a vital role in protecting the middle with burly Beau Belga.

Marlou has the ability to change shots,” said Gregorio who bagged three titles for Purefoods. “We hope he can be a leader for us. He was Sta. Lucia’s captain last year. What Marlou lacks in quickness, Beau makes up. At the four spot, we’ll need somebody to back up Gabby Espinas. We’re deep at two-guard with MacMac, Ogie Menor and possibly, Bonbon Custodio. At the three-spot, we’ve got Yousif Aljamal and Bitoy Omolon. At point guard, we’ve got a tough defender Chris Ross and shooter Pong Escobal.”

On the bubble are Dennis Daa, Jason Misolas and Chris Pacana. Expected to be released are Nic Belasco, Donbel Belano, Chito Jaime, Kelvin Gregorio and Mark Benitez.

“At first, we thought the coming draft will be shallow but after watching the players in the rookie camp, we’ve changed our mind,” said Gregorio. “We’ve got three picks in the second round and we’re optimistic we can land a power forward and a point guard to round up our roster. We begin practice on Aug. 31. We won’t call open tryouts – we know who’s out there. Our idea is to be three-deep at every position. We want to build character with discipline and develop team chemistry.”

The Meralco basketball gym is now under renovation and will be ready by Sept. 15 to be used as the Bolts’ practice facility.

“I have a lot of respect for all the PBA teams especially Purefoods which I’ve been a part of since 2001,” said Gregorio. “But when the game begins, I have no friends except the guys on our team. That’s the way it is. We’re friends off the court. On the court, there’s a job to be done.”

Gregorio, who carries the rank of assistant vice president in Meralco, was introduced to a cheering crowd of over 600 employees and their families in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, last Saturday and attended the 7:30 a.m. flag ceremony with management and staff at the corporate head office grounds last Monday. The atmosphere was appropriately electric.

“Meralco is reviving its championship tradition,” said Meralco PBA governor and senior vice president Ramon Segismundo. “We have a legacy to uphold. Our management and staff are looking forward to the new season. My focus in the PBA Board is corporate social responsibility. Our involvement in the PBA goes beyond basketball. Our team is the enabling vehicle in our sports advocacy program.

In tomorrow’s launch, Meralco will announce its PBA beneficiary – Caritas – and identify the first two recipients of athletic scholarships. The recipients are junior varsity athletes in the 16-18 age bracket. Fr. Anton Pascual, Caritas executive director and president of Radio Veritas, reportedly described the Meralco partnership as “a mutually beneficial sports advocacy and social marketing initiative.”

Villavicencio, the former La Salle coach who moved to Meralco after serving three years as Talk ‘N’ Text team manager, said he’s excited to take on the challenge of building a contender from ground zero.

My focus is to take care of the needs of the team from the coaches down to the utility guys,” said Villavicencio. “I’ll make sure the lines of communication are always open to everyone.”

Segismundo welcomed Villavicencio’s arrival, saying he provides the team with the maturity of an experienced and knowledgeable basketball team manager. He also said the squad will be called the Bolts, the winning moniker in a company-wide contest where other entries included the Voltz, Megawatts and Power Masters.

Segismindo pointed out that the funding for the Bolts will come from the pockets of shareholders and will not in any way be taken from rate charges paid by consumers.

Kirk Long deserves PBA break

8/25/2010 | ,  | 3 comments »

source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

Under PBA rules, Ateneo guard Kirk Long isn’t eligible for the pro draft because he has no Filipino bloodline. By the time Long ends his varsity career at the end of the next UAAP season, he will have lived 20 years in the country.

Surely, the long years of residence merit some consideration in determining his PBA eligibility particularly as Long, whose girlfriend is Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia’s daughter Tata, plans to settle here for good.

Ateneo coach Norman Black said there’s no doubt that Long has the ability to play in the PBA.

“Defense is Kirk’s strength,” said Black who played 10 years in the PBA as an import. “Did you notice him chasing down (Simon) Atkins and (Sam) Marata last Sunday, going through three or four screens? And he shot 22 points. Kirk plays point and off-guard for us. He alternates with Eric (Salamat) in playing point guard. We also play them together because we don’t rely on just one point guard particularly when the other team is pressing. Eric, Kirk and Ryan (Buenafe) have the license to run our offense.”

Black said he’d like to see Long, 21, graduate into the PBA. “He deserves the break,” said Black. “I think the PBA should consider allowing foreign players who’ve played high school and college in the country to join the draft. That would mean an eight or nine-year residence, disqualifying those who come in only to play in the seniors. Kirk’s father Jeff is a pastor with Faith Academy and he thinks it would be a dream come true for his son to play in the PBA.”

Al-Hussaini makes presence felt in Rookie Camp's final day

Rabeh Al-Hussaini capped his stint in the 2010 PBA Rookie Camp with an excellent performance by a potential number one draft pick.

The 6-foot-7 former UAAP MVP came away with 28 points and had eight rebounds to propel the White Team to an 80-78 victory over the Yellow Team yesterday in the Finals of the camp’s first mini-tournament at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Al-Hussaini, who also had two assists and two blocks, scored 11 of his points in the fourth quarter of a close match while teaming up with Riego Gamalinda of San Beda to subdue a strong comeback by the Yellow squad. Gamalinda poured nine of his 18 points in the fourth.

University of the East’s Narciso Llagas, who caught the attention of coaches with his energy and defensive effort, scored 16 points to show the way for the Yellow Team. Fil-American John Smith had 12 points and Khazim Ali Mirza added 10.

Elmer Espiritu, a 6-foot-4, former slam dunk champion with a good shooting touch, and Nonoy Baclao also had an impressive performance for Yellow on the final day of thecamp. Espiritu turned in six points, 14 rebounds and two blocks while Baclao had sevenpoints, 11
boards and two assists.

Air21 coach Yeng Guiao have openly expressed his interest in drafting Al-Hussaini and Baclao – instrumental in Ateneo’s two championship runs -- to bolster the Express frontline after trading Beau Belga and Billy Mamaril.

Air21 owns the no.1, 2,3 and 6 draft picks in the PBA Annual Draft set this Sunday (Aug. 29) at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig City.

Ford Arao, RJ Jazul and Alfredo Gerilla each scored 10 points as the Red Team wound up third with an 80-75 win over the Blue Team. Mark Jeffries led the Blue Team also with 10points. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Philippine Patriots team to beat in ABL

8/25/2010 |  | 3 comments »

source: Abac Cordero | philstar.com

JAKARTA -- The competing teams in the second season of the Asean Basketball League share a common battlecry: beat the Philippines.

“A lot of teams have been plotting on how to beat the Philippines. That’s the goal,” said ABL founder Tony Fernandes during yesterday’s official launch of the forthcoming season that will feature six teams from six different countries.

“The Philippines is like Manchester United. That’s why all the teams want to beat the Philippines. I say ‘good luck to you,’” said Fernandes who introduced the no-frills budget airfares to the region through his own airline, Air Asia.

The Philippine Patriots won the inaugural crown last year by sweeping Satria Muda Britama of Indonesia in the best-of-five, home-and-away finals. And nothing much has changed. The Filipinos are once again favored to win it all.

This year’s ABL will take off on Oct. 2 in Thailand.

Because of their heavy business commitments back home, Philippine Patriots team owners Mikee Romero of Harbour Centre and Tonyboy Cojuangco of ABC-5 failed to grace the launch of the second ABL season.

They would have loved being here and would have held their heads high for the Patriots. The coaches of the five other teams faced practically the same question during the launch, and that’s “How do you beat the Philippines?”

“For winning the inaugural championship, I’m sure our rivals will be preparing hard in order to stop us. But we will also prepare since our legacy and pride is at stake in the tournament,”said Romero in a statement.

“It’s our keen desire to keep the championship and we will be doing everything to form a highly competitive team,” said Cojuangco in his own statement.

In their absence, Patriots team manager Erik Arejola pitched in, as well as Harbour Centre chief operating officer Edwin Jeremillo, for Romero, and multi-media expert Maan Hontiveros, for Cojuangco.

“Any pressure on us? Well, we heard that all the teams are beefing up. But we will continue to rely on Harbour Centre’s never-say die attitude,” said Arejola, who smiled when he was introduced as the Patriots team owner.

Aside from the Philippine Patriots and the Satria Muda Britama of Indonesia, others giving it a try are the Kuala Lumpur Dragons, Singapore Slingers, Thailand Cobras and Brunei Barracudas.

The Thais changed their names from the Tigers to the Cobras, hoping to add more venom in their quest. The Thai representative here said they’re using this ABL stint as part of their tuneup for the 2001 SEA Games here in Jakarta.

There were even suggestions to limit the Patriots to just one import at a time as compared to the other teams which can field two imports on the floor. But the suggestion, for the sake of fair play, was immediately shot down.

American imports Gabe Freeman and Jason Dixon carried the Philippines to the title last year, and may be back for another tour of duty, as well as locals Gerwin Gaco, Rob Wainright, Warren Ibanez, Mark Andaya, Dino Daa and Froilan Baguion.

Dato Teoh Choo Hock, FIBA Asia general secretary, was at the launch, and said they are putting up a World Club event soon, and that the ABL champion might get the recognition of representing the region in this upcoming league.

When the inaugural ABL season was launched last year in Malaysia, there doubts, and a lot of eyebrows, were raised, considering the logistics involved in taking the different teams to the different countries involved.

It’s nice to be here because last year a lot of people thought we won’t be around for a second year. But this ABL is made up of an amazing group of people. But this year we will look much better. We have more partners starting to see the value of the Asean market,” said Fernandes.

“And our aim is to draw 12 teams. Maybe next year. A couple of teams wanted to join this year but they were late with their application. And it was getting too late so we had to close the door. And we decided to keep it as it is for now,” added the airline genius from Malaysia.

Meralco-Ginebra game to open PBA’s 36th season

Returning Meralco’s baptism of fire takes place on opening day of the Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) 36th season.

The Bolts go head on against no less than the league’s most popular ball club in the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the lone opener ushering the 2010-2011 playing calendar on October 3 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The game will see Ryan Gregorio handling a team outside of Purefoods and B-Meg Derby Ace for the first time in a decade and MacMac Cardona suiting up for his first PBA team in the last five years other than Talk ‘N Text.

“The coming season will be going to be a very exciting one," said league chairman Rene Pardo when he appeared in Tuesday’s PSA Forum together with outgoing commissioner Sonny Barrios.

“We want the people to have an initial glimpse of the new team coming in, which is Meralco. And the perfect way for it is to pit them against the league’s crowd drawer, Barangay Ginebra."

The Bolts-Kings tussle caps an opening day ceremony which Pardo referred to as going to be“very nice, and very high-tech."

The entry of Meralco, which took over the Sta. Lucia franchise, is just one of the reasons why Pardo is confident of achieving another banner year, coming in the heels of the success generated during the recently concluded 35th season.

Reverting back to the old reliable three-conference format, a fresh crop of talents, and the other usual activities of the league in and out of the court had Pardo beaming with pride that it can surpass whatever gains made last season.

Unfortunately, however, Barrios will no longer be around by that time as he’s set to be succeeded by Atty. Chito Salud once the PBA Board of Governors held its annual planning session in Hong Kong next week.

We’re all very enthusiastic about the coming season, although I would have become a PBA fan like you by that time," said Barrios as he formally announced his decision to step down in the weekly session.

But it was a very rewarding and very fulfilling stint for me. And I thank the Board of Governors for giving me that chance to serve as commissioner. In my three years, including my stint as OIC (Officer In-Charge), we’ve overcome controversies. We have been lucky to form the Philippine team during my term, which was an entirely different experience for me as a commissioner," added Barrios, who, nonetheless, was offered by Pardo to act as adviser to the league he has served for 21 years.

Both Barrios and Pardo proudly revealed the league earned P37 million in gross gate receipts for the Fiesta Cup alone, which Alaska won over San Miguel in six games.

For the entire season, the commissioner said total gross gate receipts from both Manila and provincial games earned P75.3 million, an increase of 6.6 percent from last year which earned P70.7 million.

Based on those figures alone, we really exceeded our target this season," Barrios added.

And the likelihood of even surpassing the numbers is quite attractive considering that the league decided to adopt again its three conference format.

We definitely hope that it will be different this season," said Pardo, also B-Meg Derby Ace’s representative to the PBA Board. “Holding three conferences may be going over our budget, but then again, what we noticed is that the crowd usually comes in during the playoffs. So that means, you will have three playoffs in one season alone, meaning you’ll be able to bring in more crowd and sponsors."

Pardo added the Philippine Cup remains as the first official offering of the league for the season, followed by the import-laden Fiesta Cup, and then another import-spiced conference which the PBA has yet to be named.

“The rules about the last conference are not yet final, we’re still discussing it. Although there are suggestions to make it a handicapping conference based on the results of the first two conferences," Pardo said.

The 2010-2011 playing calendar officially begins on Sunday when the PBA holds its annual Rookie Draft at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig.

There will also be the formal launching of the Powerade Tigers team (formerly Coca-Cola) and the Meralco Bolts squad, the 25th anniversary celebration of the Alaska Milk franchise, the NBA Asia Challenge at the Araneta Coliseum, the Gawad Kalinga outreach program and even a fashion show involving PBA players and the Bb. Pilipinas titleholders.

It’s actually going to be a very busy season for the PBA," said Pardo. – JVP, GMANews.TV

PBA nixes player trades between sister teams

source: Francis Santiago | mb.com.ph

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) may impose a stricter policy on the trade of players among sister teams following the result of a recent study, which outgoing commissioner Sonny Barrios dubbed as “a concern.”

Barrios did not specifically say that the league’s current guidelines on trades among sister teams painted a negative impact on the fans, but he said the survey presented by the Philippine Survey and Research Center (PSRC) “validated what we already know and what the media and our fans think about this issue.”

“It’s an eye-opener,” said Barrios of the study which was presented to the league the other day. “We should address it, but it’s for the next commissioner and the PBA Board to address it.”

“The general public from different social brackets and age-groups comprise the respondents and the result was what we expected,” Barrios said without further elaborating during Tuesday’s PSA Forum at UN Avenue.

Barrios, who will be replaced by deputy commissioner Atty. Chito Salud by the end of themonth, said the PBA Board may tackle the issue when it holds a two-day meeting in Hong Kong on September 1.

PBA rule doesn’t allow sister teams to directly trade players, but they sometimes get around the ruling by using conduit teams. Fans have reportedly been irked by these ‘unfavorable’ trades.

Only San Miguel Corporation has more than one team in the league with three – San Miguel Beer, B-Meg Derby Ace and Ginebra. There used to be four when Coca-Cola was an SMC subsidiary until it was sold about two years ago.

Beginning next conference, Talk ’N Text will join SMC as having a sister team the PBA after TNT owner Smart-PLDT absorbed the Sta. Lucia Realty franchise and will use the Meralco name beginning October.

Philippine Patriots seek back-to-back titles

The Philippine Patriots won the inaugural championship of the ASEAN Basketball League. Now the Patriots want to become the first back-to-back champions of the first-ever regional cage competition when it fires off on October 2 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Co-owned by Harbour Centre boss Mikee Romero and businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco, the Patriots are determined to form another championship team to ensure the country’s firm grip as the region’s premier basketball nation.

“For winning the inaugural championship, I’m sure our rivals will be preparing hard in order to stop us,” Romero said. “But we will also prepare since our legacy and pride is at stake in the tournament.”

Behind imports Jason Dixon and Gabe Freeman, along with ex-UAAP stars Nonoy Baclao, Elmer Espiritu and Val Acuna, Rob Wainwright and guard Warren Ybañez, the Patriots steamrolled to a three-game sweep of Indonesia's Satria Muda BritAma to rule the league's inaugural season last February.

Though most of the players from that champion squad won't be around, Arejola promise to field a competitive team in hopes of retaining the unofficial tag as the "Kings of Southeast Asian basketball."

It’s our keen desire to keep the championship and we will be doing everything to form a highly competitive team,” said Cojuangco.

Even ABL founder Tony Fernandes seems to be convinced of the Filipino's invincibility.

Now all teams are plotting against the Philippines, that's the goal. It's (Philippines) like the Manchester United in football,'' said Fernandes during Monday's press launch held in Jakarta. "But good luck trying, it's going to be tough.''

Team manager Erick Arejola and Harbour Centre COO for administration Edwin Jeremillo and Maan Hontiveros, represented Romero and Cojuangco, respectively, in that said press launch and they promised to finalize their roster by next month.

The Thailand Cobras, known last season as the Tigers, take on the KL Dragons in the season opener while other participating teams include BritAma, the Brunei Barracudas and theSingapore Slingers.

Meralco Bolts wants Taulava

source: Joel Orellana | businessmirror.com.ph

After Mark Cardona, Meralco is now eyeing Coca-Cola center Asi Taulava as part of its efforts to make an impressive showing in its maiden season in the Philippine Basketball Association(PBA) this October.

Tigers board representative JB Baylon admitted that the newest team in the league is seriously working to strike a deal with Coke for the services of the six-foot-nine Fil-Tongan.

“Yes, they expressed some interest,” Baylon told the BusinessMirror, as off-season dealings heat up going to the PBA Rookie Draft on Sunday at Market! Market! in Taguig City.

Baylon mentioned there’s no offer yet from the camp of Meralco.

Taulava, who started his career with Talk ’N Text in 1999, remains as one of theformidable big men in the league today despite his age (37), that’s why Coke is not in a rush in shifting its starting center.

Meralco, which bought the Sta. Lucia Realty franchise, has been very active in getting players through trade to have a competitive team in the 36th season of the PBA.

Just last week, Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio got his wish early when they gotCardona in a three-team trade with the Tropang Texters and Air21, which acted as conduit in the deal.

Meralco gave away its No. 3 pick in the coming draft and Josh Urbiztondo to the Express, while Talk ’N Text holds the No. 4 pick, which originally belonged to Air21.

Prior to the Cardona trade, Meralco also acquired Beau Belga in another three-team trade that also involved the same squads. Ali Peek returned to the Tropang Texters while JR Quiñahanwill also make a comeback with Air21.

And with Meralco getting a legitimate scorer in Cardona, the team now wants to have a defensive presence in the shaded lane in Taulava to bolster its frontline.

Aside from Belga, Marlou Aquino, who has been given a one-conference extension by Meralco, is the other center of the squad.

Gregorio also beefed up his coaching staff by bringing in his B-MEG Derby Ace deputy Ronnie Magsanoc and former Sta. Lucia Realty head coach Boyet Fernandez.

Meralco no longer has a first-round selection in the coming rookie draft but will have Nos. 1, 3 and 5 selections in the second round.

Air21 sends Mamaril back to Ginebra

Six-foot-six center Billy Mamaril has moved back to Barangay Ginebra after seeing action with Air21 briefly towards the end of the 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference.

Air21 dealt Mamaril back to Ginebra in exchange for a future draft pick.

“It’s among previous agreements boss Lito Alvarez (the former Air21 chief) entered into that we have to honor,” said newly designated Air21 team manager Allan Gregorio.

Acquired by Air21 from Ginebra in exchange for Mike Cortez during the homestretch of theFiesta Cup elims, Mamaril played eight games with the Express, averaging six rebounds, five points and two assists.

Earlier, Air21 served as conduit in the Meralco-Talk n Text trade involving Macmac Cardona, and the Express had its benefits, getting hard-nosed guard Josh Urbiztondo and the No. 3 pick in the coming draft.

A separate deal had Beau Belga landing at Meralco, Ali Peek rejoining Talk n Text and JR Quinahan moving back to Air21.

“I would’ve been happy with Belga, Mamaril, Carlo Sharma, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Noy Baclao. But the management has had commitments we need to satisfy,” said coach Yeng Guiao.

Guiao’s major concern is that he’s left with no big man who can run the floor.

“We now need a big man who can quicken up our frontline,” said Guiao.

Guiao and Gregorio said they will surely exercise their rights on the first two picks on Al-Hussaini and Baclao.

We’re keeping our options on our No. 4 and No. 6 picks. As of now, we’re undecided. It will depend on talents available on draft day,” said Gregorio.

We may use the picks as trade baits for veteran players,” Gregorio added.

Purefoods PBA franchise to stay -- for now

The storied Purefoods’ franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association is here to stay – at least for now.

This after the supposed sale of Purefoods, a well-known hotdog producer, to the Butch Campos' Del Monte Pacific Ltd. and Ricardo Po's Century Pacific Group of Companies, broke down due to price and control issues.

The Campos-Po consortium reportedly wanted to have controlling shares with Purefoods and in fact won the bidding over the Universal Robina Company of the Gokongwei Group.

The supposed takeover of the new group didn’t include the company’s basketball team in the pro league, prompting officials of Purefoods to gather the squad and bid farewell to the team that has become one of the most popular ball clubs in the Asia’s first play-for-pay league.

We thought it was really over for Purefoods because the top honchos even bade goodbye to the squad," said a source, who requested anonymity.

The supposed takeover of a new group that is not interested in maintaining a basketball team initially prompted SMC, which owns Purefoods’ PBA franchise, to carry a new brand new in the league – Petron.

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios told GMANews.TV that he was previously advised by the officials of the old Purefoods squad that it will carry the brand Petron for the league’s 36th season.

San Miguel Corporation has the controlling shares in Petron.

Upon learning that the Purefoods franchise will carry Petron, Barrios even instructed his staff to pull out the old Purefoods/B-Meg Derby Ace sporting merchandise in retail outlets.

Few days later, the decision was retracted and instead, Purefoods managament went back to carrying B-Meg Derby Ace.

For now, B-Meg will be the team they (Purefoods) will carry for the league’s 36th season," said Barrios in a text message.

Purefoods is the PBA’s second most popular team. It caught the fancy of local basketballenthusiasts when it entered the league in 1988.

Purefoods, then owned by the Ayala Corporation, bought the old Tanduay franchise of theElizalde’s at the end of the 1987 PBA season.

The Hotdogs inherited the bulk of the Tanduay squad composed of veterans Ramon Fernandez, who became the team’s playing coach, Freddie Hubalde, JB Yango and Willie Generelao, but drew more attention from younger audience with the acquisition of young turks like Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codiñera, Jojo Lastimosa, Glen Capacio and Jack Tanuan.

Patrimonio, a four-time PBA Most Valuable Player, became the face of the franchise until James Yap took over and became the squad's most popular figure.

Josh Vanlandingham scored 17 points to power the Blue Team past Rabeh Al-Hissaini’s White Team, 73-70, Monday in the PBA Rookie Camp at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The 26-year-old great grandson of Filipino Olympic medalist, swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso, went 7-for-7 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds as he made good account of himself for the coming Annual Rookie Draft set this Sunday at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig City.

Last year’s NCAA MVP John Wilson of Jose Rizal University, John Raymund Aguilar and Fil-Australian Chester Taylor also figured prominently with 10 points apiece as the Blue Team swept the four-team, round-robin play with its third consecutive win.

The White Team (2-1) led 66-62 before Mark Canlas scored six points and Vanlandingham drilled a trey as the Blue Team took the lead for good with 68 seconds left.

Al-Hussaini showed the way for Whites for the third straight game with 10 points. He also had three rebounds and two blocks.

Fil-Canadian Sean Michael Anthony scattered 15 points and had seven rebounds as the Red Team defeated the Yellow Team, 71-68, in the other game. He also had four assists and two steals.

San Sebastian’s Jimbo Aquino accounted for 10 points and Claiford Arao added eight for the Red Team (1-2).

Rey Guevarra top scored for Yellow with 10 points. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Trades involving TNT, Meralco, Air21 legal -- Barrios

8/23/2010 |  | 2 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Sonny Barrios believes the series of trades made by Talk N Text, its sister team Meralco and Air21 over the past few days were done legally.

Since the season is over, I do believe that the trade made by these teams that sent players to their former squads were done legally, thus the one-season ban should not be implemented," Barrios told GMANews.TV.

Barrios was referring to the separate trades made Friday that saw Mac Mac Cardona and Beau Belga going to Meralco, the league’s newest member, Ali Peek moving back to his previous team Talk N Text, and JR Quinahan returning to Air21.

Also finding himself a new team was Josh Urbiztondo, who is now with Air21 along with the No.3 overall pick in the draft as part of the Cardona trade. The No.4 pick of the Express was acquired by the Tropang Texters.

Barrios added that the season-long ban for players returning to their former teams will not anymore take effect as the 35th season of the league has just ended.

“I’m sure teams knew when and when not to trade players. Since the season is already over, the trade that sent players back to their former teams were done legally," added Barrios, the outgoing commissioner, who will pass the baton to Atty. Chito Salud at the end of the month.

But while Barrios cited the reason to uphold such trades, newly-crowned champion coach Tim Cone of Alaska blasted such trades involving the three teams.

Well, it begins anew. Sister teams trading with each other involving a third party lackey. Now, it’s the other sister teams," said Cone in his Twitter account.

Former Philippine Basketball League commissioner Chino Trinidad also have things to say on the trades that were happening in the PBA.

Let’s thank SMC and the MVP Group for espousing playing out of bounds, which is the only game they know how to play," added Trinidad in his Twitter. - Rey Joble, GMANews.TV

Rabeh Al-Hussaini shared scoring honors with 12
pointsas the Red Team streaked to its second win with a 76-71 victory over the Red Team Sunday in Day 3 of the PBA Rookie Camp at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The 6-foot-7 center wasn’t exactly dominating. He went 1-of-4 from the field and grabbed three rebounds, but was steady from the free throw line, going 10-for-12 as the Red Team moved within a win of sweeping the mini-tournamentfeaturing 63 aspirants seeking a chance to play in Asia’s first play-for-pay league.

Al-Hussaini, expected to be drafted by Air21 as no.1 in the draft, also got splendid support from Riego Gamalinda (10 points), Giorgio Ciriacruz (nine points) and James Mangahas (nine points).

San Sebastian’s Jimbo Aquino, last year NCAA MVP, also scored 12 points for the Red Team. Claiford Arao, Al-Hussaini’s former teammate at Ateneo, added 11 and four rebounds.

Fil-Canadian Sean Michael Anthony scored eight points, had four steals and three rebounds. But more importantly, the 6-foot-4 guard drew the attention of four-time PBA MVP Alvin Patrimonio.

“He's a great leaper, a solid defender and shoots the ball well," was how Patrimonio, now team manager of B-Meg Dedrby Ace, described Anthony.

In the other game, Mark Canlas scored 16 points as the Blue Team also claimed its second win, 80-65, against the Yellow Team.

Barnett Rogado top scored for Red with 12 points while Elmer Espiritu, Khazim Mirza and Robert Labagala each added nine apiece.

Nonoy Baclao, another prospective first round draftee, didn’t play in the second half and scored only four points.

Coach Johnny Tam of Air 21, who called the shots for the Yellow Team, said Baclao is not in shape, prompting him to sit the 6-foot-5 center in the second half.

The PBA Rookie Camp resumes Monday with undefeated White and Blue Teams clashing at 9 a.m. and Yellow Team (0-2) battling the Red Team (0-2) at 10:30 a.m. also at the Ynares Sports Arena. Admission is free. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Express secure top 3 picks, but surprisingly lose Mamaril

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv

Air21 has made great investments in securing the top three rookie picks in the coming PBA Draft next week at the Market! Market in Taguig.

On Sunday, August 29, the Express will have their historic moment. Air21 became the first team to secure the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 picks in the Rookie Draft since it was instituted in 1985.

But coach Yeng Guiao wasn’t amused. He is more surprised to learn that he lost two of his best frontliners in the Express – Billy Mamaril and Beau Belga.

“It’s good to have the top three picks in the draft because it’s an investment and this will be a historic moment," Guiao told GMANews.TV in a telephone interview. “But I was surprised to learn that Billy Mamaril is no longer part of our team because of a previous commitment with another squad. I’m all set in having both Belga and Mamaril in our lineup, but now, they’re gone."

Belga was traded to Meralco, the newest team in the PBA. He was part of the three-team, three-player trade that also included JR Quiñahan and Ali Peek. The Expresswere able to obtain the rights on Quiñahan from that trade while Peek went back to the Tropang Texters.

The Express lost another frontliner, Doug Kramer, during the latter stretch of theFiesta Cup won by Alaska over San Miguel Beer, when they agreed on a trade with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters for the services of guard Marcy Arellano.

Air21 was also involved in a separate trade where it got the No.3 pick in the coming draft plus Josh Urbiztondo from the Mac Mac Cardona trade. Cardona was sent to Meralco to become its new franchise player, while Talk N Text got the No.4 pick previously held by Air21.

The Express did end up as the winner in player exchanges, except only when they lost Mamaril, reportedly headed to Ginebra.

“I’m surprised that we lost Mamaril and that’s a downside for us. We lost Belga, a frontliner who can run. Now, we’re stuck on having Carlo Sharma and Quinahan, but both of them are mere post up players. We need a big man who can run."

Guiao is expected to make former Ateneo stalwarts Rabeh Al-Hussaini, half brother of Sharma, and Nonoy Baclao as his No.1 and No.2 picks, respectively.

“Yes, we will pick them both, but Al-Hussaini plays the same role as Quinahan and Sharma. He can post up, but he’s not a running big man." said Guiao. “Baclao may be the only big man who can run for our team. We need to get a rookie frontliner who can run in the coming draft and he might be our No.3 pick." - GMANews.TV

Hayes, Ciriacruz to PBA draft

Two of the best players in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will join the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft scheduled Aug. 29.

Player-agent Alven Torres has confirmed 6-foot-3 Jose Rizal University’s workhorse Marvin Hayes and Arellano University’s 6-foot-3 scoring forward Gio Ciriacruz have already submitted their respective application to the PBA offices.

“Marvin and Gio are very hardworking, driven and dedicated young talented players who can become an asset to any team,” said Torres, who handles seven players in the amateur and professional ranks.

His players are rookie Mike Burtscher of Alaska, formerly Sta. Lucia Realtors Chito Jaime, rising amateur standouts Chris Camus of University of Santo Tomas, Adrian Celada of Arellano University and Mike Galinato of Adamson University.

Most of my players including Hayes and Ciriacruz are attending one-on-one skill training and plyometrics under conditioning coach John Aquino to keep them in top shape,” said Torres.

Hayes averaged 10 points and 8.4 rebounds in the NCAA last year, while Ciriacruz averaged 19.2 points per game also last year in the same league.

Meanwhile, John Marion Wilson scored 22 points to lead the Yellow Team past the Red Team, 76-60, yesterday in Day Two the PBA Rookie Camp at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

The 6-foot-3 guard, who steered Jose Rizal University to the NCAA Final Four last year and eventually became its MVP, also cornered seven rebounds in an impressive performance that overshadowed the efforts of Claifford Arao, who topscored for the Red Team with 10 points.

The 6-foot-4 Arao is reportedly high on the list of coach Caloy Garcia of Rain or Shine which will pick at No.5 in the PBA Annual Draft set on Aug. 29 at the Market! Market Place in Taguig City.

Ex-MVP Wilson shines in PBA Rookie Camp

John Marion Wilson scored 22 points to lead the Yellow Team past the Red Team, 76-60, in Day Two the PBA Rookie Camp Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Unfortunately, the former Blue Eagle failed to impress Garcia.

It’s not about the numbers. What we’re looking in a player is the kind of effort he puts on the court, the energy and the ability to hassle. Claiford showed none of those today,” Garcia said.

Arao thought otherwise.

“I’m happy with my game. I thought I did well,” said Arao, who also had five rebounds and four turnovers.

Garcia though seems to have a change of heart. He said he’ll justfocus on his team’s urgent need.

“I guess we’ll just concentrate on our priority. So that means we’ll choose either a guard to backup Ty (Tang) or a wingman to backup Gabe (Norwood),” said Garcia, who hinted he is interested in Letran high scoring guard R.J Jazul.

Possible no.1 pick Rabeh Al-Hussaini managed just nine points but that was enough to lead his White Team to a 73-62 victory against the Yellow Team in the other game.

Elmer Espiritu topscored for the Yellow Team with 10 points.

Fil-Foreign aspirants Mark Jeffries and Josh Vanlandingham also did well. Jeffries, a 6-foot-4 forward, scored 11 points and Vanlandingham added eight for the Blue Team.

The Camp resumes Monday with the Red Team taking on the White Team at 9 a.m, and the Blue Team going up against the Yellow Team at 10:30 a.m.

Both games will also be played at the Ynares Sports Arena.

The scores:

First Game

BLUE TEAM 76 – Wilson 22, Jeffries 11, Vanlandingham 8, Pradas 5, Adolfo 5, Canlas 5, Reyes 3, Gupilan 3, Musni 3, Tecson 2, Rafil-Aval 2, Hermida 2, Taylor 0, Mazo 0, Aguilar 0, Gavina 0, Taganas 0.

Meralco gets Cardona as its PBA franchise player

It didn’t take long for Meralco, the newest member in the Philippine Basketball Association, to acquire a franchise player.

Meralco had a busy Friday, making wheeling and dealing and ending up landing a franchise player in Mac Mac Cardona and an up-and-coming star forward in Beau Belga. (Returning Meralco gets promising Belga in 3-team trade)

Newly-installed Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio confirmed this newdevelopment to GMANews.TV.

Gregorio, also the team’s head of basketball operations, sent the details of the trade via a text message. Meralco will get the high-scoring Cardona via a three-team, three-player trade that also involved Air21 and Meralco’s sister team, Talk N Text, guard Josh Urbiztondo and the Express’ No.4 overall pick in the coming Rookie Draft on Aug. 29.

Urbiztondo, a courageous guard inherited by Meralco upon acquiring the old Sta. Lucia franchise, will be headed to Air21, which is in need of a backup point guard. The Tropang Texters, on the other hand, will get the No.4 pick from the Express, who officially own four first-round picks.

"Our goal as early as Day 1 is to be competitive. In as much as we are focused on building this franchise, which could stand the test of time, I believe that Mac Mac will be an integral part in the whole process. He is a scorer who will help us on offense. He is a competitor who downright hates losing. I am excited to work with him," said Gregorio, who is a strong candidate for the Coach of the Yearaward after steering Purefoods to the Philippine Cup crown against Alaska.

Earlier in the day, Meralco also made a bold move by acquiring the services of the 6-foot-5 Belga, a young forward from Air21, in a separate three-player trade involving the three teams.

In securing the rights on Belga, Meralco unloaded Ali Peek, who went back to the Tropang Texters while slotman JR Quinahan had to be transferred again to the Express. (

Just a week after making a big jump to assume the coaching spot of the young Meralco franchise, Gregorio made known his intention to get a big-time scorer.

And Cardona is the immediate solution.

In other news, Willie Miller has reportedly signed a two-year extension for the Ginebra Gin Kings. (

Returning Meralco gets promising Belga in 3-team trade

source: gmanews.tv

One by one, Meralco is putting the pieces in its bid to build a competitive team for its debut campaign in the 2010-11 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) season.

The rookie franchise made its first official transaction on Friday, almost two weeks since being accepted as the newest team member of the league, by acquiring burly and defense minded Beau Belga from Air21 in a three-team trade that also involved big men Ali Peek and JR Quiñahan.

The Reddy Kilowatts dealt Peek to Air21 for Belga. Peek was then sent by the Express to the Tropang Texters for Quiñahan.

The trade allowed Peek and Quiñahan to rejoin their former ball clubs.

But the deal could just be the tip of the ice berg.

Sources around the league said Talk ‘N Text top scorer Mac Cardona is certain to join Meralco this coming season and that works are now being done by trying to find a third party to make the trade possible. (UPDATE:
Meralco gets Cardona as its PBA franchise player)

Under PBA rules, the sister teams like the Tropang Texters and the Reddy Kilowatts could not trade players directly.

Although Cardona still has a live contract with Talk ‘N Text, a source close to the shooting guard out of De La Salle disclosed the player has agreed in principle to suit up for Meralco.

Cardona cannot be reached for comment as he is currently out of the country after getting married last month.

If ever Cardona moves to Meralco, he is certain to become the franchise player of a team that so far only has Nelbert Omolon, Chris Ross and 14-year veteran Marlou Aquino making up its core.

Coach Ryan Gregorio also chose to keep mum about the Cardona trade.

The bold move came days after the team with a celebrated history in the 70s lured Ronnie Magsanoc and Boyet Fernandez to be Gregorio’s assistants over at the Meralco bench.

Magsanoc, one of Gregorio’s battery of assistants with Derby Ace, was enticed by his former coach to join him at Meralco, while Fernandez currently calls the shots for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the UAAP and was the ex-mentor of the defunct Sta. Lucia ball club – the PBA franchise brought by Meralco lock, stock and barrel.

The Reddy Kiolowatts own just one pick in this year’s Rookie Draft and Gregorio has been vocal about using the No. 3 selection on versatile University of the East big man Elmer Espiritu.

A former slam dunk champion, Espiritu is described by Gregorio as “athletic, a hard worker and a defender."

“The profile I am looking for is youth, the hunger factor, and the winning attitude,"said Gregorio. “We’re trying to start from ground zero here." – JVP, GMANews.TV

Smart Gilas Pilipinas wants 3 PBA stars

The Smart-Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff plans to formally request three players from the PBA to reinforce the national team in the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in November.

The PBA players are Asi Taulava, Kelly Williams, and James Yap.

A Smart-Gilas insider revealed that Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman is now looking at possibly of having the three players following his evaluation of the national team after the FIBA-Asia Stankovic Cup recently in Beirut, Lebanon.

Rajko wants the three, the source said, who requested anonymity as the Smart-Gilas management has yet to meet with the PBA to discuss the possible inclusion of pro players to the national team.

A meeting is set next week between the PBA, the Smart-Gilas management and the Samahang Basktbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to discuss the loaning of players, which needs an approval by the PBA board.

Taulava, Williams and Yap were actually in the ‘short list’ Smart-Gilas coaching staff had. It also included San Miguel Beer’s Arwind Santos, Rain or Shine’s Sol Mercado and Williams’ Talk ’N Text teammates Ranidel de Ocampo and Ryan Reyes.

However, the source said Toroman is sticking with the 6-foot-7 Williams to improve the four spot, while Taulava, who already played for the Nationals in the Stankovic Cup, will be a big help at the center position.

As for Yap, the sweet-shooting guard of B-Meg Derby Ace who recently bagged his season PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) can bring his outside shooting to the RP team, which is important in international competition.

It makes sense to have the three, they can really contribute to their respective positions,” said the Smart-Gilas insider.

“The idea is to have reinforcements, and keep the core of the RP team who has been with us since Day 1,” he added.

The source also mentioned that adding another point guard to the team can only complicate things as Mark Barroca and JV Casio are already rotating for the position, and if needed, off-guard Chris Tiu can slide at the point to run the offense.

The national team has until September 15 to submit its final line-up to the Asian Games organizing committee.

Miller, Ginebra reach accord on extension

Former two-time PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Miller has reached an agreement to a two-year extension with BarangayGinebra, ending speculations that he’s going to another team next season.

A reliable source who has knowledge with the negotiations said the 5-foot-11 Miller already gave his approval to the deal with the Kings, which is approximately worth P8.4 million for two seasons.

That means the Olongapo City native will earn a maximum salary of P350,000.

“It’s a done deal,” said the source, who asked not to be named as the contract has yet to be finalized.

In a telephone interview with the Bulletin, San Miguel Corp. (SMC) basketball operations chief Robert Non said that they will start talks with all the players with expiring contracts next week.

Aside from Barangay Ginebra, the SMC group also owns San Miguel Beer and B-Meg Derby Ace.

Miller, 33, the league MVP in 2002 and 2006-07 seasons, joined Ginebra in a blockbuster one-on-one trade with Alaska last April 28 in exchange for high-leaping guard Cyrus Baguio.

Miller helped the Kings enter the quarterfinals of the Fiesta Cup, but they lost to the Alaska Aces in a thrilling five-game series.

Baguio, on the other hand, played a key role in Alaska’s title campaign in the recently-concluded Fiesta Cup Finals when they beat San Miguel Beer in six games of the seven-game showdown.

He was named as Welcoat Paints co-Finals MVP with LA Tenorio.

PJ Simon was acquired by Tokyo again from Temacula re-sending forward Harvey Carey to his former team. Thanks for that one day contribution to the team. PJ completes the Guard rotation of the Samurais with Mike Cortez and Ronjay Buenafe. Asi Taulava, Mark Telan, Joe De Vance and Rob Wainwright completes the front court and Randy Holcomb of Alaska as the import. The team is now waiting for a few more deal to round up its conference deals. 04/10/2008 7:50 AM

After a bragging loss on game 1, Tokyo made another amplifying move with the leagues hottest trader. The Samurais sent, with a broken heart, Eric Menk, Renren Ritualo and Leomar Najorda to Teamcula Red Hawks for sensational rookie Joe De Vance, Tokyo returnee Rob Wainwright and Harvey Carey. The deal was pushed because of ineffective performance of our forward starters. With these changes, Tokyo is hoping to achieve its first back to back wins this conference after winning Game 2. We thank Eric, Renren and Leo for contributing to the team and wish them well with Dennis(Espino who was dealt earlier to Dighay for Mark Telan) and welcomes our new players with a bang. What's next with the team? Its rather "Who's next for the team"

Vakeros Gang……….Bagong Pangalan…….Bagong Pag-asa!!
By : Badap Gutierrez

“We are ready for any brand of play. We can go big or small depending on what team we will be facing. The whole organization are serious in this campaign and no matter what we will fight up to the last. We will promise especially to our fans that our team right now is tougher and more competitive. Sta Lucia Team is our inspiration. No one look them but hey…..They are now the Champ and we will do the same”! ani ni Kulitz

Fighting Katalas: Different Name, Same Fighting Heart
by forrest gump

Coach Bo Perasol knows it well, his team might be regarded as a collection of aging superstars yet more of a defensive team. “Our team is basically leaning on its defense, as you can see, if the Chinese team has its own great wall, the Fighting Katalas have its own MMDA freedom wall. They are called freedom wall because they can do whatever they want on the opposing teams especially on defense. Guys like Rommel (Adducul), Billy (Mamaril) and Dennis (Espino) are the season veterans of the team and are members of the Eraserheads, they can definitely erase your shots if you dare drive into the lane” said the master tactician from the Diliman Republic. Don’t be deceive however with their aging line-up, the team can also run with the backcourt combination of Miller and Tenorio ably backed up by the rejuvenated Belasco, this team can run with the rest of the league (of course with their pants on). The team is also loaded with tweeners especially at the center and forward position with the presence of Enrico Villanueva and Marc Telan not to mention the upgrading of the position of Belasco from mere Forward to Center/Forward position (thanks mainly to the Palaboy Scandal). The team however is still anxious about the quality of their import since they are still yet to see his performance. “The team is contemplating on bringing in Toni Kukoc to counter the plans of other teams in bringing in NBA veterans like Karl (Malone) and Scottie (Pippen). Kukoc will be the best fit for our team since his name sounds like a bird, a game bird to be exact. Kukorokukuk!” said the amused co-team owner, chong-go, mimicking a fighting cock.

Even with the change of the team’s name from Fighting Parrots to Fighting Katalas, team owner matutino assured the betting public that they can still bank on the fighting heart of the Katalas. “We may have changed the name of our team but the fighting heart of our team will always be there. We just changed the name from parrots to katalas in order to sound it a little more local and also to promote the local name of our own variety of parrot here in the Philippines which is the katala. The katalas are endemic here in the Philippines and are listed as one of the endangered species so it’s the team’s own little way of promoting conservation” said the shy type team owner while chomping crispy pata and conferring with DQ at the LBDP. Also, the change of the team name is in line with being one with the team’s co-owner. “My co-team owner’s name is chong-go and my name is matutino so it’s just appropriate that we make our team name sound local, we thought of a name that sounds like our names in matutino and chong-go but we came out with something not good in katalo and katulo, so we settled for katala. Imagine calling our team Fighting Katulos or Katalos, that would be the laugh of the entire league.” added matutino.

Cone likes RJ Wild Pussies’ chances in FG event
By RJ Mojo

HIS voice was so loud it can be heard the entire gymnasium. For three hours, he drilled his team so hard, a statement RJ Wild Pussycats’ team is ready for the big battles to come. Scanning the sweat-drenched bodies of the eight players he is about to coach in the coming MYPBA Fantasy League 2008 Fiesta Conference, multi-titled coach Tim Cone was a picture of confidence.
“This is probably the strongest team I am going to handle since our magical run with Alaska in the 90s,” Cone told MYPBA FG Patrol shortly after his team’s practice at the Moro Lorenzo gym inside the Ateneo campus.
“This team has talent, no doubt about it. But to make them altogether play as one cohesive unit is the most important thing for us right now.”
Leading the RJ Wild Pussycats, one of the tailenders the previous conference, is Arwind Santos.
The 6-4, do-it-all forward, was the leader in statistics in the recently concluded Philippine Cup won by the Sta. Lucia Realtors. Other members of the squad are Jimmy Alapag, Harvey Carey, Sonny Thoss, John Ferriols, Larry Fonacier, Denver Lopez and rookie Ryan Reyes.
Cone said he’s awaiting the Talk N Text import. He had a one-on-one discussion with GM 05coach regarding the choosing of import. Both concluded to pick the Phone Pals reinforcement as the company pays good and invests so much in securing an import.
“Choosing an import is like an investment and Talk N Text is a good investor,” said Cone. “But more than that, I feel we have a pretty solid chances in winning the crown. We need to turn our critics believers.”
GM 05coach, who is running his team for the second conference, vowed to make a rebound this time even if it means parting of ways with his kumpare and former coach Ryan Gregorio, who was chosen first pick overall among coaches.
“Good thing coach Tim is available. A coach like him is hard to pass up what with the 12 championship he had. Two of which are now placed on his feet,” said 05coach.
Cone describes his squad as versatile – one that can run the breaks, can play solid team defense and can execute halfcourt set.
“Arwind is a reed-thin player that can somewhat be likened to a galloping horse that never runs out of energy. Jimmy is the wisest mouse in town. Sonny Thoss is beginning to show who’s the boss. John Ferriols’ looks are deceiving he can be mistaken as a leading man in a movie, but he can beat you with his charm inside the court. Larry Fonacier is an innocent assassin. Denver Lopez provides stability in the backcourt and Ryan Reyes is one of the most likable newcomers in the business today,” Cone said.
“All told, we’re ready to rumble.” 03/04/2008 6:23 PM

Ninja Kid may ibubuga?

03/04/2008 12:31 PM

Will Versatility & Pure Talent Alone Be Enough?
(a Chocofish preview)

Entrenched in the most silent division, this Chocolate Starfish team has decided to do something that defied logic (and silence). They talk about being versatile, but not on its players' positions. It is where they all came from.

"We have to be there in all cylinders. We believe there is talent everywhere. Hope so." owner k-ville said in an emphatic statement.

The only fantasy team right now with at least a fantasy player playing on every mother team should be a nice distinction to this franchise for this conference, but on the downside, it has some questions surrounding its players especially on their health. They also hope that they maintain their team chemistry for a long part of the season unlike the previous conferences.

The team is spearheaded by the Jays, BGK's aging yet sensational PG Jayjay Helterbrand, and TNT forward Jay Washington. It has been known that they were actually more ecstatic with their draft pick on Joe Devance, a good rookie from the Welcoat Dragons.

The rest of the team are: Danny Ildefonso (MBM), Tony dela Cruz (ALA), Dennis Miranda (AFC champ SLR), Carlo Sharma (RB), Gabby Espinas (A21), Coach Binky Favis (COK) and the reinforcement of the Purefoods import that is unknown as of this time.

Ildefonso's health and the dubious choices of TDLC and Denok are in place, but the team is somehow confident they'll overcome these obstacles and declares ready for the upcoming import FL.

"Masasabi kong mga underdogs kami sa division na ito kasi mas malalakas talaga ang mga teams dito on paper compared sa'min, pero susubukan naming magpahirap ng mga kalaban dito kasi lagi na lang nila ako pinahihirapan! Rak en rol!" the owner added in a jokingly Tagalog manner.

Well, the versatility is there. The upside is there. The talent is there, too. Will it be enough? 03/04/2008 10:20 AM

NINJA KID the old kid in town
by: Eng Engoten

After a missing in FL for almost 2 years, team Ninja Kid is coming back into action.
Ninja kid is a former REDFOX BATUTA owned by Top Honchos Taong Hamog Sympatia is now happy for acquiring veteran players.

“I feel great when I got these boys from the draft. And I was surprise I get Kelly “The Machine Gun” as my 1st pick. Imagine 9th over-all pick ang team namin then I still get Kelly. May halong malas yung crispy pata at fried chicken sa LBDP na kinainan namin kaya napunta sa 9th pick ang team ko or I don’t know yung kamay ba na bumunot sa draft lottery ang medyo malas. But during the draft day I feel I can get a player base on my priority and thanks god napaganda pa ang outcome- sympatia said.

Right now team Ninja Kid (NK) still waiting for their main man Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes who are still in vacation after the tremendous/marvelous game last conference. Kelly has a big role here; he is one of the prime forward in our FL. As well as JJ Helterbrand who played consistently and the come backing of Pure Energy Gary David said by co-team owner MarkD.

JJ Helterbrand a PG sensation last conference said “I’m happy with my team mates now; we are mixed of defensive and offensive players. And I’m happy I will play again with Kelly. Yeah we’re both doing good last conference when we’re playing in Tokyo Samurai. I hope Gary will deliver this conference.”

The boys are now practicing get into shape and some players still in healing process to heal their injuries. Reynell (Hugnatan) and Rob (Wainwright) and Gary (David) who are injured last conference was expected to play their A game for the team NK.

During the practice I talked to Gary David. He said “Medyo nanibago tayo last conference hirap pala mabakante ng matagal nawawala ang rhythm sa laro. But slowly and surely nakakabalik na tayo yung confidence ko tumataas na ulit. Magagaling ang mga teammates ko ngayon sana magcompliment ang mga laro naming this conference. Babawi ako napahiya ako sa sister team naming Tokyo Samurai last conference di ako nakapag deliver kaya nag 1st runner up lang kami. Promise babawi tayo ngayon”.

– hugnatan said.

I get a chance to talk with Rob Wainwright about his new team NK. He said “I feel great now, I’m 80-85% condition but when the game starts I will show my 100%.”
You played good last conference averaging 25 FPPG but slowly you numbers were getting down. “Yeah! I started strong but my injury really hurts me. I hope I got that numbers again this conference” – rob said.

The team NK is a team to watch, they also get the service of Sonny Thoss who played great game last conference also Ryan Reyes a surprising rookie and Homer Se a big surprise last FL. I tried to talk to Se and Thoss during their practice but the two was busy playing tong-it.

But coach Binky said “Malakas ang team in terms of talents and ability but syempre import conference ito ngayon kaya medyo ayaw naman naming pangunahan ang laro. Una wala pa kaming import di naming alam kung magaling ang makukuha namin o magaling lang mag English. But in terms of condition nasa 80% na ang team. I hope before the start of the conference mag 100% na kami. Wag lang kami sisipunin. (crossed finger)”. 03/03/2008 6:30 PM

Mazzta Plan handa na!?!
by: Routers

2.29.2008 401 PM

Coach Chot Reyes Nagbabalik Pantasya
Pipigilan ang Streak ni Jong Uichico

Tawirang Balita

“We’re still lacking two quality guards in our lineup; we cannot rely on Chico Lanete yet. I’m also asking the management of Sayunachi na wag na I trade si Asi Taulava just to get the services of Kerby and Tenorio, I personally believe Asi could give us what we are looking for”, ang masayang tugon ng batikang coach ng aming kapanayamin kung bakit di na siya nagnenect-tie kada laro.

Nang kanyan malaman na dalawang sunod ng nagchachampion sa JPM’s Cup si Coach Uchico, isang mapang hamon sagot ang kanyang sinabi, “I will give him a run for his money. Baka di niyo alam bago ako humawak ng RP Team at simula mag hire ng coach sa FG eh ako ang kauna-unahang National Champion coach. Hawak ko noon ang Pasig Pirates pero nasa Perflo’s Cup kami. What I like about Jong’s achievement is he never failed to catch a division championship every conference, siya pa lang nakakagawa nun pati na two consecutive national championship. Needless to say, wala ako when he achieved that feat, on the other hand I have high respect for him as a coach and as a person.”

Ang Blackbelts ay binubuo nila Asi Taulava, Eric Menk, Reynel Hugnatan, Raffy Reavis, Harvey Carey, John Ferriols, Chico Lanete, Home Se.

“We are trying to re-acquired our former players like Alex Cabagnot, Kerby Raymundo, LA Tenorio and Arwind Santos. Nandun na kasi chemistry ng team, pero kung di naman sila makuha buo naman tiwala naming kay coach Chot Reyes. Gusto pa sana naming kunin si coach Uichico kaso nakuha na siya ng Marikina ni Windblown, so we did the second best possible and that is to get the services of a former FG National Champ tactician,” pagmamalaki ng team owner na si DQ habang naabutan naming namamalantsa ng kanyang uniporme sa opisina dis-oras na ng gabi.

Ng amin siyang tanungin tungkol kay Chot, hindi niya hinintay matapos ang aming tanong, “Chot and I are good friends. So kung ano man pinagsasabi niya wala problema sa akin. He’s just motivating himself I believe, pero I will defend my crown in JPM’s Cup because it’s as important as winning the Marvin’s Cup and my third consecutive national championship with him around para wala na siya alibi,” isang maanghang niyang tugon. 2.29.2008 9:42 AM

Palaboy's Cup Scandal Nakapag iinit... Pero Nakaraos Din!

After almost a week of debates and solution formulating ay natapos din ang kalbaryo ng mga taga Palaboy's Division. Kramcire's Boston agreed to trade 10th overall pick Kerby Raymundo to Epenid's Temacula for 6th pick overall Nic Belasco. A condition was noted by Bostons owner to the office of the commisioner for further evaluation and to be announced to the league after the review of the Kumes. "Medyo lugi ng konti pero OK lang for the sake of the fantasy league. type ko rin naman si fafa Nic. Basta yung proposal ko regarding this trade na lang ang inaalala ko. Pag naapprove yon ay go na kami sa division." said the former Pussycats owner. And my assumption is that this will not end here. Feel ko lang hehehe!!! "Sa akin naman dapat talaga si Kerby in the first place." Bulalas naman ng Temacula team owner. "Atleast fair din naman dahil pareho namin first pick overall yung dalawa saka Purefoods fan ako kaya gusto ko lang talaga makuha si The Kid." Pagtatapos ni Epenid. Because of this development, all teams in this division are now open to transact.

Mark Clemence Telan, the newest Samurai...

Photobucket

The newest member of the in the Tokyo Family, we welcome Mark Telan. The center/forward from Coca Cola is now united with teammate Asi Taulava and former Tanduay teammate Eric Menk in the frontline. Although in the expense of Dennis Espino to Realtor coach Karaski of Dighay Ballerz and also the fact that Coke this conference will have 2 imports, we still believe that he will contribute to the team well bringing his double double averages last conference. Whats next for Tokyo? Watch out... From the Coca Cola Tigers wearing jersey number 13, at forward, Mark Telan... 02.27.2008

All Stah Mazztah Plah hindi naka unah

Logic tells me pampadagdag-saya yun, and to some, retooling a roster dahil hindi napunan nang maayos noong draft day.

Sana! Hehee..

Mukhang malaking pagbabalik gagawin ng KNP this year. Peek-peek, alapapag tsaka yung favorite ko, carey-carey! Eh anong joke time kaya gagawin nya kay Belano? Hahaha!

Issue 1 and 2 is all about Chocofish, Issue 3 ay free-for-all na! Exciting, ano? Buh-bye! laugh.gif

Veteran Starfish takes on new-comer Alagad ni Mike Angelo
“No Mercy for the newbie”

“Chalk 1 for the veteran”, team owner Jeric of Chocofish assumes. Chocolate Starfish who have the tradition of winning early tournament games is favored to win their first match against a young inexperienced team of Alagad ni Mike Angelo.

“We will crush the new-comers, there will be no mercy, this is how we welcome them” the undisturbed owner declared.

“If its war they want, well give them one, we are new team in this league but we are no push-overs. Well see who’s the better team.” dhee18

Game 1 is scheduled at the Chocolate Aquarium.

another rivalry on the making? KV hinay-hinay lang...nyahahaha.

MARVIN DIVISION: Group of Death?

Teams in this division: Masalco Dolphins (anaclet; defending champ, Tokyo Samurai (MarkD), Fighting Parrots (matutino), Mazzta Plan (solidbgk), Steel Underground (zuperman, returning), Chocolate_Starfish (kingsville/faye), Arabian Knights (mhatzkie, returning), Tribu Sugbo (Binsoy), Air Tsinelas Di Nadudulas (nastrans), Mike Angelo Dhee DEVILS - jeffry / Alagad ni Maerky - maerky (rookie team)

Kakaiba kapag sinabing "ranked 13 in MPE at only 2 conferences".
